Hi all, Somewhat technically challenged here. About a week ago, after a power outage, we lost our home Verizon DSL conection - (posting from work). Specs: a Mac and a PC running through a wired network to a router and dsl modem. I tried the usual easy steps - rebooted the pc and mac, also the router and the modem. Reset the router and modem for good measure. No help. What do I do next? Is there a good resource that will tell me the steps to go through? Or should I just call Verizon? Thanks in advance, Jim |

What usually works for me is one of three things 1.Reset the router. 2.Release and renew your connection to your ISP through your router. (usually on the status page in the router setup) 3.Unplug your modem for 30 seconds, and plug it back in. 99% of the time #2 does it for me.

Don't forget to check the simple things, like the phone cord going to the DSL modem. A phone call to Verizon will allow them to check to see if they can see the modem, test it, reset it.... Are you being issued an IP from the router, is the router getting an address from the DSL modem? Did you try connecting the Mac/PC directly to the DSL modem to see if it gets an address? |

Called Verizon and walked through a reset. Looks like it was problem #2 on JMF's list. The power outage seems to have caused the router to lose the dsl login settings. Once restored, it started up right away. Thanks JMF and Monster. As an aside, any idea why windows or OS-X doesn't walk you through troubleshooting, much like the techs can over the phone? Seems like an easy enough program to write... |

That's because it is not an OS level issue. The walkthrough troubleshooting would need to be provided by the DSL modem manufacturer or the DSL service provider.
