I exported my work email from Outlook as a .pst file and now am trying to open it at home (import) using Outlook. I keep getting an error message that the .pst file is not compatible with my home machine. Both machines are running Windows XP and Outlook 2003. Does anyone have any insight into this problem? |

Oops. Sorry. I just noticed that my home computer has Outlook 2002; work has Outlook 2003. Please disregard above post. |

How convenient for Micro$oft to make the file formats incompatible!

Can you use outlook express to import it?

Express doesn't appear to have the capability to import .pst. I downloaded a trial of Outlook 2003 and it imported with no problem. |

Tom, Please. MS is about to release yet another Word file format. More justification for supporting OpenOffice and the move to ODF, if it was needed. |

Actually, the new Word format is going to be open and XML-based. So even if you don't have Word, you'll be able to open the files and recover the text within. And others should be able to reverse engineer the format. Plus, I believe MS has finally signed on for OpenDoc support. |

Rastro, we can believe it when we see it. Microsoft often pays lip service to standards, but their policy is to "embrace and extend" which sounds oh-so-nice but it means their extensions (or "enhancements") are incompatible with the rest of the world. And since they are Microsoft, who is to argue with the 800 pound gorilla?

AngelaK: The 2003 format supports a host of services unavailable on previous versions, hence the incompatibility. You should be able to use the import function to bring the data from the office PST file into the home PST file. Sometimes there are a couple extra hoops to jump through. Instructions are at: http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/assistance/ha011190371033.aspx Of course, if you still have access to the Office machine and data, you can re-export in the 2002 format, which probably would be easier. Incidentally, the PST file is easily corrupted. If that happens, you lose all the data contained therein. If you haven't already done so, go to the Microsoft Office downloads page and get the personal folders backup utility. Cordially, Steven
