Our Dell desktop gets a lot of use during the the course of the day, and often late at night. As a result we usually leave the pc on 24/7. Are we doing any harm to the machine or shortening its lifespan? |

I haven't seen any statistics in awhile... in 'the old days' it was actually better to leave the PC on, so the hard drive wouldn't have to spin down. With modern drives, I don't believe that's as much of an issue anymore. My guess would be, "no, you're not doing any harm to the machine". I would probably set the screen saver to turn off the monitor after 20 minutes, but that's about it. |

Years ago Microsoft recommended you reboot every few days....something to do with memory leaks. Since XP, I don;t believe this is an issue, but as Case indicates, putting your monitor to sleep is a good idea. |

Check under power saving settings. There are settings that allow you to have the harddrive spin-down when possible and to save power other ways etc etc. |
