Just letting you know in case you're in the market for a new G5 Mac, that the Intel Mac has arrived. For you graphics folks, Quark 7 comes with a free upgrade to Intel compatibility and the Adobe Suite will be compatible in about 6 months. |

I'm guessing Noo2wood is referring to Apple's new desktop computer, the Mac Pro, introduced just a couple of weeks ago. That basically complete Apple's switch to the Intel processor, but the iMac, the Mac Mini, MacBook and MacBookPro laptops have already been released with Intel, starting last January. Most professionals in the graphics industry will use desktop machines, so for that group, the MacPro is new news. Sales of Intel machines have been good for Apple, curious to see what the future brings to their marketshare. |

I have learned that some people have figured out the hacks required to install Mac OS on regular PC's, such as Dells. This could hurt Apple sales very deeply.

those hacks have been around awhile now, basically with PearPC, and I wouldn't consider it an install for the average user. It would be so much easier to buy a new Mac with Intel and then run Windows on it, if needed. |

Yes Bailey, that's what I meant. I was going to look up the name but I figured graphics people would know what I was talking about. |

I would feel so.. dirty.. installing MacOS on a Dell. My MacBookPro came with 1 gig of ram, just ordered a 2nd gig for 98.00, including shipping and tax. I remember paying 300.00 for 8 megs of ram back in 1994. Then again, I remember paying $0.31/gallon for gasoline in 1967. If only our cars ran on memory... Is there any other commodity that costs that much less today than just a dozen years ago?

Yeah, it's perverse to install MacOS on a PC. I'm trying it out. It's not too bad, really. What's really sick is to put Windows on a Mac. Yes, most electronics have followed the same price/performance curve over time. It is hard to get used to, in any case. Every time something new comes out, we are as amazed as we were last time. And it keeps happening, so you'd think we'd get blase about it, but we don't.

"I have learned that some people have figured out the hacks required to install Mac OS on regular PC's, such as Dells. This could hurt Apple sales very deeply. " I don't think "very deeply" is acurate at all. I doubt that many of the people who would actually want to go through all of the steps to install it would buy a mac anyway. I converted a family member last week after her PC died. She was sick of having problems with PC's. So my sales picth of... Mac's don't have most of those problems went over fairly well. There is always the horrible program flyakite which makes your PC look and feel like a Mac... only it drains all of your resources and crawls. I have no idea why people use that, but I have seen 2 in the last week. |

Someone already raised that point, and I stand corrected. The hack is too difficult and ugly, and it won't work for long, because software updates will undo the hack, rendering the machine useless. So it is only for people with expertise, nerve, and the gumption to use a pirated copy of an OS.

I tried with the AMD patch... and I gave up after a few hours of tweaking... I just don't have the patience for it because I have my wifes Mac sitting next to it. If I didn't have a mac... I would get it to work eventually. |
