Dan Frakes compares a Mac Pro with a Dell Precision 690 using Dell's Small Business Store to configure the Dell to a close match with the Mac Pro. http://www.macworld.com/2006/08/features/macproprice/index.php
here's a follow up article replying to a lot of the email he received about it. http://www.macworld.com/2006/08/opinion/dellmacprofollowup/index.php

I am a fan of Apple... The only real problem I have is that they make it clear that unless you want to spend well over $2,000 you can't buy a desktop. I mean I like the mini, and the imac... but why can't I buy a Desktop with a core 2 duo, and I can upgrade the parts (specifically the video card) as I need to I think the mini is going to have incredible sales this year though, and my wife's G4 400 is approaching archaic status in the computer world... so what am I going to buy?A mini is really only option we have (we share a monitor between my PC and her Mac otherwise maybe an iMac) |

Because the new Mac Pro is a desktop for professionals, with the hardware and price to match. Apple may very well introduce a lesser model, maybe the Mac semiPro, but then again they have the iMac which is a desktop, it just doesn't have the upgrade possibilities that a Mac Pro has.

I'm a big fan of BMWs. The only real problem I have is that they make it clear unless you want to spend $30,000 you can't buy a car. I mean, I like the Mini... but why can't I buy a 5 Series? |

Glock, why? I thought I would feel that way, but I've seen the Intel Macs and I think they're excellent.

If you're a power user, you have to upgrade cpu's anyway, right? Serious gamers spend hundreds on graphics cards too, so who comes in under 2k then? Apple doesn't have a moderately priced model you can selectively upgrade, but they rarely have. At least now the real pro units are easily upgradeable. BTW, the mini's are so cheap, you can just upgrade the entire unit after a year, and get some money back with eBay. |
