Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop (less than a year old) running xp no longer shuts down properly--it gets hung up at a blue screen with the windows logo (not the blue screen of death, and not the normal one that says "please wait while windows shuts down"). The only way to shut it down is to hold the off button down. It starts up and runs normally. it's not a damaged exit sound file; i've cleaned out temp folders, run several different spyware scans, changed the power scheme. I don't believe I installed anything new before this problem began a few weeks ago. The windows troubleshooter for shutdown problems suggest things like editing the registry that I'm not comfortable doing myself. I haven't tried reinstalling windows or going back to an earlier restore point. any thoughts? anyone want to try fixing it for me for a reasonable fee? |

If it's less than a year old, won't Dell support help you? |

I would bet that a reinstall should fix the problem. |

have you checked your alerts in device manager? check this, 1: Click - Start - Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - Power Options Tab 2: Then click APM - Enable Advanced Power Management Support 3: Try to shut down or restart. |

view this M$ page here Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? try this reg hack, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PowerOffActive RG_SZ 0 According to the X-Teq X-Setup Windows tweaking utility, one can change the preceding Registry setting from 0 to 1 and this will 'strengthen' Windows' resolve to turn off during a shutdown. " you can use X-Setup Pro to do this hack also, without having to open the registry. |

Monster, I don't seem to have that APM option under control panel/options. I did change the power management settings (to default Laptop) but it didn't make any difference in the shutdown problem. When I try to shut down, I don't get any message at all (no "saving settings")--just the screen with the windows logo; no pointer. I do have service pack 2 installed. Hacking the registry is beyond my very modest computer skills. Could you tell me how to do it step-by-step... speak slowly, in words of few syllables ;-) I guess I could call Dell support...

turns out Dell support is free for only 3 months. after that you have to pay. I did a system restore to a point before the problem began. windows is now shutting down properly (tho it's taking a long time to start up). So, fixed for now. Yay! thanks for the suggestions, MOL-ers... |
