Cant format cd's

I can't even close it by pushing the little x button. Are there other (hopefully free) programs that format cd's for you (yes I have a PC). That does a pretty nice job of burning audio cds. just make a playlist of the songs you want to burn, and hit burn up at the top right. Have you always had to do that? Doesn't sound right, unless maybe it's a CD/RW?
