Yeah, I saw this - thanks to your postings I check the site weekly - and there's a 300GB PATA drive for $79.

Amazing, isn't it?

Soon enough. If it gets to a reasonable price point by January I'll be very very satisfied.

Monster, remind me again what I need to do to shove one of these puppies into my mirror-doored G4.

you need to get a controller card for it.

If you get a SATA drive make sure to get a SATA controller card (make sure it has an internal connection and is not just for external drives)

Case, I'll bet you that your extreme satisfaction over your super duper hard disk will wane after six months. The problem is that our storage needs keep up with the capacities.

Yeah, but it is always nice to be able to consolidate. I still remember my excitement when I bought a very expensive 20MB hard drive for my 8088 machine. Do you realize how many 5.25" floppy discs you can store in twenty MILLION bytes?

I think that when we get to petabyte storage I am going to have to reevaluate my needs.

I guess 1 terabyte disks are around the corner.

Then how many years before pedabyte disks?

Hey, speaking of this stuff, is there a decent quality, decent price USB RAID system? I think that as our home networks become sophisticated and UPS's become common, so should RAID boxes.

Wow, $200! I looked a few months ago, and if I remember right, the best I saw was $1500.

Now we're talking!

So, any terabyte drives yet? I want an external drive that'll work on both a mac and PC, continuously... so, just plug 'n' play, no formatting... I guess.

just format it intitially as fat32 and everyone can use it.
You could always pick up one of those NAS drives I posted about the other day, I believe you can order from Costco online even if you are not a member, I think it just costs a wee bit more.
I haven't hooked mine up yet, but you should be able to have both NTFS and HFS+ drives available through it.
For instance, format the internal drive as NTFS, and then one of the external drives attached to it as HFS+.
If you want all drives to be read/write accesible by each OS then use fat32, unless your Windows machine is running an app such as MacDrive which will allow it to read/write to HFS+ volumes.
Rumour has it that Leopard will have the ability to read/write to NTFS.
