Dave, I like them both is there anyway to offer the user the choice of which style to user, dynamic threads, or...? Maybe we could all get together and write a few add-ons for Vanilla ourselves, tailored for MOL's needs. whoops, my water is boiling over....

A faster server with more RAM. I'm still open to keeping this software because I hate the idea of losing the data. But I like the new board because it's new and has more options. |

If you're confident you'll be able to implement the necessary and requested features, my vote is to go ahead with the new software, since you like it better. I think I like it better, too. If copying the old posts from the old board to the new one proves to be hard, just leave the old board up. The more time passes, the less important it will become.

KOA, As much as I lke the new software and all of the things it comes with, my honest opinion is that it just doesn't feel right. And I'm not the sort of person who is typically afraid of change. I say stick with the old software and try to find a way to gradually work in the new stuff - posting to both, etc. Is there a newer version of Discus that might have all of the goodies but allows you to keep the same look and feel and history?

I think you should keep the old format temporarily but clearly broadcast that change is coming. Personally, I think change is a good thing and should be encouraged and embraced, but this was too sudden for the average computer user who is comfortable on the discus board. I really think you'll lose a significant percentage of posters if they're faced with the new look. Let me know how I can help. |

I am not getting used to the "new" MOL - I know it has the potential for a lot of things that "power users" can utilize, but as a straight-foward communication tool, it wasn't getting it done. As others have already mentioned about themselves, I'm not big on change. But, I did not see a great improvement, at least not one that justified the trade-off. |

I see improvement in terms of certain functions like RSS and a search that works but the learning curve is a bit too high and a few people I've spoken to believe that it's just a hassle to deal with figuring out how italics work or pasting a link or many of the other things that have become givens. I can't disagree with them. AJC is going to kill himself the first time he tries to post something with bold, italics and colors in the text. Forget about double sizing and underlines.

Well shucks, I just don't know. I don't find it radically different. Maybe it's because I've used so darned many computers and software systems in so many years. Functionally, they're pretty close, to be honest. I did not find changing fonts easy in discus. Yeah, it's confusing in Vanilla, but not more. I think the change will be FINE after some time. It is a one-time cost, so to speak. The problems with the old software are a constant cost. Obviously, given enough time, the constant cost is more costly than the one-time cost.

But we have to find the common ground. It sounds as if Dave and Jamie are still open to suggestions as to the software. What's out there that you like? Dave - what are the ideal specs you have for MOL? Please keep it simple for the non-techies - those I've heard from are seriously so confused they can't figure it out.

RSS is useful for serious, regular users - or, should I say, serious users who don't want to actually go onto the site to find out what's being discussed. And that's what the divide may be - there are readers who have a great deal of experience with online communication, but there are a lot who do not. MOL should be accessible to a wide range of users, and have a format that encourages readers from across the spectrum, from new entrants to the pros. After all, there are a lot of message boards out there. Maybe the accessibility of MOL is what has made this what it is. As for the search function, I gave up on that long ago. A Google "advanced search" on this site seemed to work just as well.

I agree with you, too, nohero. I realize accessibility is key. And I may be a bad judge of what's easy and what's hard. I disagree with you, however, if you are implying that the google search is as useful as a search ability right on the board. One possibility is having the search bar execute a google search under the covers. Hey, Dave, while you're waiting or deciding, maybe you should add to the games links a link to http://www.literotica.com/forum OK, well, maybe not. It's yet another message board, which is what made me think of it, with all this dicussion of messageboard software.

Ive had a number of folks (many of whom I didnt know were MOL posters/lurkers) come up to me the past week and say something to the effect "whats the deal with MOL?..I dont like the changes..I cant figure it out (which means they wont, actually)". Im not sure its strictly the user-friendly aspect that attracted them, but the appearance of being less user-friendly is keeping them away. People obviously really do not like change. And I agree, the spectrum of users range from avid/regular online communicators to the not terribly avid. |
