Odd behavior with MS Windows.

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve noticed an odd behavior while using MS Windows. This happens on two systems I use, one running NT 5.x and the other on XP. Both PC’s are new, less than 6 months. Tons of RAM and Hardrive. Latest updates are loaded.

When I move my mouse to click on an item, the curser moves until it gets just to the boarder of the item I need to click and then stalls. Kinda bounces off and will not allow me to point into the area. If I slide the mouse all around the mat, do figure 8’s and back, it stalls. I can slide down and come back to the point I want to click from the bottom and then slip in form the other side and get in.

I took both mice apart and cleaned the ball and the rollers. I cleaned the mouse pads.

I thought I was going wacky so I play with it and it happens. It seems to have a mind of its own. When it happens, if I move my eye to another click point and move toward that one, bingo it happens there.

Now the weird. If I look at a click point, but slide the mouse to a click point I can only see with my peripheral vision, no problem.

Is this in my head or has anyone ever seen this behavior?

Sounds like either a mouse driver issue, a video driver issue or possibly a virus. Do the virus scan first, then try the other two.

There is no such thing as NT 5.0. You either have Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro. If you have Windows XP Home or Windows ME expect MAJOR problems. Get rid of ME or XP Home and buy XP Pro.

As for the mouse, try using a different one (buy a cheap one at a computer store or borrow one from a friend) before you drive yourself crazy with software problems. If you have a more modern computer (under 2 years old) get a USB mouse.

Otherwise, you may want to reinstall the mouse driver. It works differently in different operating systems so post what you have from one of the options above and I'll tell you what to do.

Hi,

I was going to suggest that you may have dirt on your mouse balls, but I see that you already cleaned them. That was a smart first step, and would have been my first course of action.

I might also think that there was a virus somewhere that either infected your mouse driver or was sitting in memory as an NT service and somehow watching what you were doing with your mouse and messing with it. #9 and AZ are correct to suggest that you re-install your mouse driver. Also, I would use some diagnostic tools and look at what processes are active in memory... if there was something that you did not recognize, I would be suspicious. I would also use Google to try to identify what the suspicious process was.

The fact that it is happening on two different systems leads me to wonder if you had a virus on one system which somehow got transmitted to another system.

Also, make sure that the connector of the mouse cord is firmly connected to the back of the PC. Sometimes these cords can be pulled out slightly and it causes strange behavior.

Let us know how you finally got things to work!

I suspect funky software. Make sure it's not being emulated (Under properties...) and certainly check to see that it happens uniformly in all programs. This sounds like some bad mouse over nightmare.

AZ has it right. Try a different mouse and if that doesn't work, try re-installing or updating the driver for the mouse.
