Hi guys, the keyword text-box control seems to be missing from the search form.

Dave posted a reply to this under the thread "Search engine"

Here it is: "Due to server load issues we had to remove it for the time being. The size of searchable text has simply grown too large to search in an effective manner (approaching 1 GB). The only option available at the moment was either to delete the Attic section or disable search."

Is there a way to have search work a section at a time, i. e., you can't search entire board but say a max of 1 or 2 areas at a time. Maybe a choice between searching the Attic or elsewhere but not both at the same time?

It SEVERELY limits the wonder, magnificence and utility of our virtual world not to have search.

You guys rock, as usual...!

Be well, all.

Unfortunately, the attic is useless without the search. Serious conundrum.

I do agree that it's a real loss not to be able to search by keyword. I went through the archived "Please Help" thread just this morning, and I was able to dig out some very useful information about movers based on the titles of various threads, but it sure would have been nice to be able to spend less time doing it. *sigh*

We're exploring alternatives, including off-peak windows when it's available.

Jamie and Dave, I feel that it is a loss, not to be able to do the keyword search. I don't know what sort of software the site runs, but if it's unix and can integrate with other programs, you could build an index with a program such as glimpse which would make very fast searches. Whatever you use to implement it, I hope you manage to do it. As a newcomer, I am interesed in old messages!

Tom,
Thanks, I'll take a look at glimpse.

Tom,

What makes you think Glimpse indices would interface with Discus?

Discus creates static HTML pages, so it could work. The only problem I see is that the TITLE field for results will be the same for every page and it may be problematic to narrow searches by section. I haven't read through all the documentation yet, though.

The answer to the performance problem is pretty obvious: You need to move the board into MySQL. There's no way that performance can be adequate using static HTML files as a base. Anything else is putting off what you'll need to do eventually anyway.

Does Discus provide any tools for such a port?

Did I say it does? I know nothing about this system. I carefully used the word "if".

Please bring back keyword search. Even allowing it on off-peak periods as you suggest would be a great improvement-even during a fixed regular period such as 11:00pm to 7:00 am.

Isnt disabling the search feature actually increasing the space problem by making more people post redundant topics?

Not having the search feature is causing the same subjects and questions about roofers, dentists, painters etc., to be asked over and over again. The information being given is reduced each time, because people are getting tired of re-entering their experiences.

If the owners of this board get revenue generated by advertisers, then how's about doing what is needed to get the SEARCH FEATURE BACK?

Hey Dave

Is there anything devoted MOLers could do to help you fix the search problem? Donations? Personpower? Agreeing to live without MOL for awhile so that you have more time?

(By the way, I used to wish there were a way to specify that I wanted to search just one section of the attic (e.g. home fix it) as opposed to the whole thing. Any chance of that happening eventually?)

If you look at the bottom of most topic pages, you'll see that archives are now forming within them rather than in the Attic. The plan is to return the search mechanism in the coming weeks, which will allow searching in all but the Attic section (which is just too big at the moment to search without overloading our little server, which, by the way, is doing its darndest to serve up more than 2 million pages a month ... and we're proud of the little guy for the 24/7 work.)

I did notice the archives within the topics. Good idea, and thanks for the great work on our behalf!
