As many of you know, I run a website for the Millburn / Short Hills area called www.millburnweb.com.

A few people had asked me to put the entire Millburn High School sports schedule into the event calendar on millburnweb.com. There were over 700 events scheduled for the year, and I did not feel like typing them in myself.

I also did not feel like going to the high school directly for the raw data. It has been my experience that the people who run the high school websites run it liek a fiefdom, and do not like to share with surrounding communities.

The data is not proprietary, and is publically available in print.

Since nobody stepped forward to input all 734 sports events into the online event calendar here, I had to take some action...

I noticed a tiny article in the Millburn Item which said that Millburn High School put their entire schedule up on www.highschoolsports.net. So, at least it was in machine-readable format somewhere. I browsed through highschoolsports.net and came up with the proper URL for Millburn High School.

I then wrote a program (using Microsoft's .NET Framework and the C# language) which extracted the data from highschoolsports.net, and translated it into the internal database format which millburnweb.com uses.

Since Jamie and Dave have been nice enough to let me mention www.millburnweb.com here on MOL, I would like to offer this program for them to use. I assume that Columbia High School has sent their schedule to highschoolsports.net.

If anyone wants to alter my program so that it conforms to MOL's database format, then they can do so. Remember, the program is written in C# and you need to use the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (or at least a C# compiler).

Hi Marc,
Thanks for the offer. What are the technical requirements to run the script?

Hi Dave,

It requires Microsoft's .NET framework (which can installed over Windows 2000) and, if you are going to change the program, you need a C# compiler. It is a desktop application. You also need Excel, but I am sure that you have that already.

There may be a few high schoolers on MOL which can alter the source code for you. Also, you need to modify the progrtam so that extracted row/column data can be put into the database you maintain. Which means renaming database connection strings and column info in the program.

It may be too much trouble for the purpose it serves, but using it, I was able to save myself a lot of typing. You may also have a Board of Ed who is willing to give you the data in machine readable format... I did not want to wait for the various layers of the Millburn Board of Ed to rubber stamp the request.

Doesn't look like Columbia HS is listed.

Yes, there's that. And I'm concerned about MOL being perceived as an "offcial" source of information. Schedules may change, etc. The BOE should be the resource for this information. MOL isn't official. We're too radically fun and irresponsible for that.
