When I try to searh for something in Yahoo I can't put anything in the search area and when I double click I get an error about Microsoft Internet Explorer is experiencing a problem. Does anyone know what this could be? I use Windows ME on my computer.

If you get an error message directly from Internet Explorer, I would do two things.

First, reboot the computer and see if the problem disappears. The cause could very well be another application corrupting system files, memory fragmentation and hogging by another app, etc.

Second, if the first thing does not help, I would download and install a fresh copy of IE from the Microsoft web site.

I do professional computer troubleshooting, and sometimes, just reinstalling an application does the trick.

i tried doing both of those but it still doesn't work. I don't think I have a virus on my computer. It won't even let me go into the control panel. It's a direct error from Internet Explorer.

Called tech support last night on an unrelated problem. The technician suggested uninstalling IE and clicking on "replace with prior version". It solved the problem.

Can you get into the control panel when you are off line?

To uninstall your current version of IE: go to control panel and click on add/remove programs. Scroll down the list until you come to microsoft internet explorer. Highlight and click. Follow instructions.

Good luck.

Visit http://www.opera.com and download their Opera web browser. I like it a lot. It loads pages faster and can suppress popup pages. It also allows "mouse gestures" which are useful for keeping your hand on the mouse: you sweep leftwards with the right button held down, and that takes you "back" one page. Also, Opera lets you scale a page up or down. Scaling up is great for those of us who are too proud to wear reading glasses.

Tom, Opera is a pretty good program but just to warn you keep a version of IE or Netscape on your machine. We develop software for the internet and Opera is the last Browser that we become compatable with.

Most sites will be fine, but a few of the newer stuff might not work.

Brett is right. IE has about 99% of the market, so web sites test for IE and usually stop there. It's too bad, because there are published standards about what the server and browser should do, and many violate the standards. When a site works with IE, people don't know or care about the violations. And Opera users might complain to the web sites, which will fall on deaf ears, since they account for such a small market segment. Opera claims that it's the web sites, not the browser that needs fixiing. Or if Microsoft fixed IE such that it would break the web sites, the web sites would clean up, but that's not likely, either.

This is the result of Microsoft's "embrace and extend" policy on industry standards. Once they hook you, you're caught.

So when a site doesn't work with Opera, I try Netscape, which implements most of the violations. When that fails, I use IE, as a last resort.
