at work, they recently replaced my computer, with a newer (not brand-new) one. formerly, I used media player to stream radio on my computer. now, the media player on the new box is CONSTANTLY re-connecting, thus interrupting the music CONSTANTLY. constantly being like every 10 seconds or so. any tips on what I can do? I have poked around IE options, including connections, but am in over my head here. I want my WFMU! help! |

I can't guess what the problem is, but maybe you should update your OS and media player software. In Internet Explorer, pull down Tools, then select Windows Update. The rest might be self-explanatory. Good luck. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Ok. I did it. downloaded the updates, restarted, etc. same problem. one other thing, maybe this is a clue: the sound is kind of like a 33 rpm record being played at 45. I just don't understand how to adjust this. |

Can you uninstall and then reinstall the program? Sometimes this helps. Also check to see if you have more than one version of the program installed on your hard drive. If you don't uninstall an older version before installing a newer one, the old program sometimes interferes with the new one. Good luck. |

I've used some of these fixes before (Not this particular one though). http://www.rodmac.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/fixes.htm#Fault6 It looks like you should lower the bandwith that your computer thinks it has. The new computer may have been set up for a much faster connection. |

thanks, Brett. using this info, I changed the "performance" settings AWAY from "detect connections" and instead chose LAN connection as that's what I have. this seems to help some, but the connection still seems to be reestablished every minute or so, resulting in cessation of the audio while the media player re-buffers. is my machine just focacta?! it really seems like it should not be this complicated to fix. |

I think Brett was implying that you should LIE about the speed of your connection, and you should lie lower, not higher. Tell it you have a 56K modem, and see if that helps. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Right on Tom. Tell the computer that your connection is slow. The computer will try to compensate for that. Once you get a solid connect bump the speed up little by little until the Music gets choppy again. Lower it once more to the previous setting and ouy should be all set. I think it’s a setting problem not the computer.

Tom: Thought you might find this amusing. Three of the Products we support are failing Leap Year dates. They were launched…… March 1st 1999. I hate supporting third party stuff.

I have gone ALL The way down to 28.8 modem as my preference. I click "apply" to apply the new setting. the media player STILL keeps interrupting and re-buffering, about every 25 seconds or so. this is feeling hopeless. but maybe that's just the skinhead music talkin. |

I think I can get this right: My system is Microsoft Windows 2000 I am using Microsoft Media Player. in trying to resolve this issue, I downloaded the latest version (9.0-?). OK one thing i have noticed, because I have now re-started the stream (hit play) with each connection adjustment - is that the player seems to stop and re-buffer at the same time intervals, no matter what connection setting it's on. i.e., with every different setting, it stops and rebuffers after 0:17, 0:54, 1:35, and so on. is this coincidence just coincidence, or does it suggest something else? THANKS!! |

I just went to http://www.wfmu.org and saw that they have several options for streaming audio. You can get it over Real or mp3 stream. You may want to ditch windows media player in favor of one of those. I tried both Real and mp3, and it worked, for my small sample of time. My computer uses musicmatch for mp3 audio by default. This is a free download from http://www.musicmatch.com, but it nags me for updates to the software, like so many other players. We call this nagware. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Brett rules!! he helped me mostly fix the problem, by raising the buffer amounts. it still stalls periodically, but less than before. thanks for all your attention and help too, TomR!! |

seriously. I thought I was INSIDE the computer. or it was inside me. it was so abrupt and startling it made me laugh semi-hysterically, by myself in my little office here. probably bugged out the people outside my door as well. |

Brett - was that found money (well, the "found money" you found at Gaslight Commons) ever claimed? not that I am trying to claim it, I don't live there and it sure wasn't mine, I was just wondering. I can imagine my panic if I realized I lost cash I was carrying. wondering how it turned out. (oh, and pay no attention to the little blips in Tron. that's NOT me.) |

It was. I told the Front desk that I had found some money and to keep their ears open. Same day a lady walks in asking about it. The front desk got the Amount from her, called me, I returned it. Reward: Close to a billion Chic Chip Cookies |

If you want a perfect app for streaming, then get to Apple and download iTunes, http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ for windows. I use it on my Macs and my Winduds, while your at it, after the install open an Apple Music Store account. Download songs, albums, and audio books. If you have kids you can set up an allowance account for them, or give music store gift certificates. iTunes is great for cataloging all your music, very easy to make playlists, convert audio into mp3's or AAC's, convert tags, burn CD's or DVD's from, etc.... Something else thats great about iTunes, share your music from one computer to others on your network, Mac or Windows, even across the internet. Think Different
