I replaced the 3-wire CPU heat sink fan on my computer with another 3-wire fan. The original fan had a red wire and a black wire. The new fan has a red, black and yellow wire. On the original fan, the black wire feeds back to the third pin.

Anyway, my computer now does not shutdown anymore where before, it used to shutdown by itself when I selected the shut down function.

Any ideas?

If you list the exact model numbers for the Dell (including motherboard) and the new fan, I'll try to track down the circuit diagrams and read them for you...
