for the past two days i can't access my msn.com home page -- i also can't use the google search on my toolbar. i get a page that says "we can't find www.msn.com" or "we can't find www.google.com" on the bottom it says "powered by msn search" and when i hit that link it says "we can't find search.findwhatevernow.com"
any clues?

You’ve got AdWare.

At some point you downloaded something that is trying to redirect your requests to their advertiser’s sites.

Got to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Download the free software and run it a few times a month. This will keep Ad and Spy ware off of your computer.

When you go to a website in your history, do you see an updated version of the page? That would only apply to dynamically updated web sites, such as a news site or something that is updated frequently.

If you get a chance, try going to http://216.254.114.228. That is my web site's IP address. If you can get to that, but not to www.klomstock.com, then you have a DNS problem. Talk to your ISP.

If you can't get to either, it sounds like a connection problem, which can be more complicated to diagnose.

You can try downloading this

http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

It contains some checks that AdAware does not. look for the "whatever now" entry and delete. Just be carefull what you remove.

Also try going to http://www.safer-networking.org/ and downloading Spybot-Search & Destroy. It is a good (free) spyware killer that complements Ad-Aware well. I find it most effective to use both, as each tends to miss things that the other one catches.

still having some problems...
installed adaware 6 and reinstalled spybot.
i also have had the google toolbar.
one problem that spybot cannot fix is "purity scan"
also, i keep getting boxes on my screen saying "spybot search and destroy has detected an important registry entry that has been changed.
(example: category: browser menu extension
change: value deleted)
it then asks to allow the change or deny the change.
i've been clicking "allow the change"
am i doing the right thing, since i really don't understand any of this.
sorry i sound like such a nerd (or maybe not!)

Have you tried running Norton Utilities or the equivalent to identify and clean up problems with your windows registry? Can you adjust your spybot to a lower setting?

Viva,

You’ve got a nasty little bug on your machine that spybot is trying to get rid of. Try this

Restart your computer and when the first screen comes up hit F2 (Might be F8 on your machine).

There is an option to start in “Safe Mode” that will only start the computer but no networking or other processes.

Run spybot, adAware, and HiJackThis (Or whatever you have)

Restart

thanks brett.
Ran spybot in safe mode. The one problem they cannot fix after several runs is an item called "purity scan."

i ran adaware. the scan results show 768 items. i double clicked on several of the items (bugs???) and they say the risk is low. i didn't do anything else because i am unsure what to do with those items. do i check them and delete? do i leave them alone? sorry for being so ignorant.
really appreciate your support here (all)

The big question is whether or not you still see a problem with your browser. If you can hit all of the web sites that you want, you pretty much fine. Spytbot has an update button that will update the software for the latest threats, so do that once a month.

Don’t delete everything you see. Spybot looks at the Registry; this is where your computer finds out what programs to start every time you login. Sometimes they’re bad, but most of the time they’re good. If you don’t know a lot about computers then just leave it be, maybe you can ask a friend to look at it for you some time. I think you’ll be fine though.

everything seems ok now.

i just read jim coates column in the star ledger this morning and i am sure that the root of the problems were a hijacked browser -- i kept losing my home page no matter how many times i reinstalled it.

a good tip that coates gives for pop ups is to hold down the alt key and tap F4 (you all probably know this!) i am going to reinstall the google toolbar, which i got rid of, thinking that there might have been a problem with it.
coates also explains how to disable "messenger services." that's next.

thanks so much for your help.

Since last Friday we can't access our msn.com home page.We also can't use the google or yahoo search. We are getting a page that shows "we can't find www.msn.com" or "we can't find www.yahoo.com" on the bottom it says "powered by msn search" and when we hit that link it shows "we can't find search.findwhatevernow.com"
What is the solution?
