Great choice. You can buy one new from Apple's web site for $1,099. And it's faster.

1GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @ 1GHz
12-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
256MB DDR266 SDRAM
30GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory
AirPort Extreme ready

dave, we went to the apple store website and upgraded the memory to 512MB, the hard drive to 40GB and added the AirPort wireless connection. The subtotal is $1200. Is that a superior system to the one on overstock.com, and are the upgrades we made necessary for his college research and assignments?

I made a mistake.

The product I described is an iBook, not a Powerbook.

I think anything with 256MB ram and a 30gb hard drive is plenty for most people. If anything, add RAM rather than disk space. 30gb is a lot of room unless it's being used to edit movies.

Here's an offer with some rebates

is there a big difference between the products? if so which model would be best? if there is, does that make the powerbook that overstock is offering more attractive?

A 14" iBook with the options you have mentioned, in the Apple Edu store, sells as the below

• 768MB DDR266 (256MB built-in & 512MB SO-DIMM)
• 40GB Ultra ATA drive
• SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
• AirPort Extreme Card
• Keyboard/Mac OS X - U.S. English
• 14.1-inch TFT XGA display
• 1GHz PowerPC G4
• ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 w/ 32MB DDR video memory
Subtotal $1,648.00

without the Superdrive it's $1,468.00

You may be able to shave a little off by purchasing the memory and or Airport card elsewhere and adding them in yourself, it's not that hard.
For instance, the 512MB memory upgrade at time of purchase costs $180 at Apple but it's only $99 here, http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=5496&Item=OWC2100DDRSO512

One item that is a must purchase is Applecare, it can be purchased and registered anytime during the first year warranty. This will give an extra 3 years of insurance for covered items, not to mention free phone support.
I've another 2 years left on my Applecare for my iBook, oh yeah...if at sometime the iBook is sold the Applecare is transferable to the new owner.

then again if you wait until he's at school he may find an even better deal at the Campus bookstore, I've heard of some silly low prices at times. I know someone in another state that picked up Microsoft Office X for $24.
I doubt if all prices will be that low but the college store can have fantastic deals, especially on previous version software & hardware.

If you check the most recent copy of Fortune (with arnold on the cover) they have an article on laptops for college bound kids. Questions to ask etc.
