How to describe this? The task manager on my Windows XP Pro machine comes up now in a floating window without the usual windows border (ie, no "close window x" at the top right corner, etc) and most importantly NO TABS to switch views. This means it only shows the application view, I can't switch to view running processes (which is what I want to do). I suspect this is some kind of a hack perhaps, but neither Spybot nor Ad-Aware seem to be picking anything up. Alternately, I may have clicked some preference setting or another inadvertently and did this to myself. Thirdly, perhaps our desktop support personnel pushed some sort of security setting that did this to me, as this is a company machine. Anybody know anything about this one? I've searched around online but can't seem to come up with anything useful.

I don't know why it's floating with out the boarder. You can hit your tab button untill the tabs at the top are highlighted, then arrow left or right to another tab. Then tab till a process hightlights and arrow down. |

That's the thing, no tabs at the top at all. That part is gone too. And -- this is interesting -- these windows now show up as an icon in the far right corner of my task bar when they're open. Didn't used to do that before. It almost feels like another program was substituted in for the usual task manager surreptitiously.

You're not gonna believe this, but I was showing a cow-orker this window, he said "just click around all over the place" and lo and behold, one of the double clicks magically made the window reappear in the correct way. Windows is soooo intuitive!

Sounds like you may have a systems resources problem. My computer at work acts like that when it is being asked to do more than it can handle at once. Rebooting usually solves the problem. |
