I keep getting this pop-up on my hotmail. When the page comes up it takes the entire screen and does not give me an option to close the pop-up add down. There is no tool bar on the top or bottom of the screen. The only way I have been able to get rid of it is shutting down my computer. Any suggestions?

Two suggestions:

1. Try installing a pop-up blocker.
2. Switch to a different e-mail provider.

Isn't there a "block pop-ups" option in your browser?

Oy. Here we go again.

1. Get a pop up blocker.
2. Please download a copy of Spybot Search and Destroy. Run it in Safe mode. Post results here.
3. Consider switching to a new browser (like Firefox)

Try hitting Alt and F4 simultaneously to kill em.

This is how you do it on a PC, Linux or Win the same.

Norton Internet Security includes a virus checker and a software firewall. They roll in a pop-up blocker, an ad blocker, and lots more. I can't even see the ads here on MOL, and I want to. I'll eventually figure it out. This is money ($70) well spent, and I'm getting a $20 rebate.

Tom:

Are you sure you aren't using the "no ads" version of MOL?

Yes, Joan, I'm sure. I can toggle "ad blocking" in Norton Internet Security. When I do that, I reload the MOL page, and I get an add if ad blocking is off, not not if it's on. There is away to allow ads from particular domains, but I haven't figured out exactly how to configure it yet.

Yeah, I just installed Norton internet security. Screwed up my whole network set up - what a pain!

I was suprised that it was able to black out the banner ad images, since it's a home grown script. I'm going to attempt to rewrite things so it can't block them.

Tom,

You should be able to see the ads now - I tweaked it some.

Not to muddy the waters, but I use a free blocker called PopSubtract, which is toggleable and doesn't screw up any other s/w.

Hope this helps.

Just want to add there is great virtue in knowing keyboard commands. Then, when a popup window with no toolbar or X to click invades your screen, you don't have to shut down, but can get rid of the invader. All you need to do is either:

ALT, F4,
or
ALT, spacebar, c

There are loads more; see them at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/s upport/kb/articles/q126/4/49.asp&NoWebContent=1

Ctrl-W will close a browser window. Sometimes, some of the ads are so aggressive, you practically have to lean on Ctrl-W to kill the ad windows, because they spawn so quickly. And then if you do, there's the danger of closing a window you really want to be open.

Tom
I agree about Norton Internet Security. I just upgraded to it a few months ago. Got mine for FREE, after the rebates from Staples!!!

There are ads on the MOL message boards? I don't ever recall seeing 'pop-ups,' though in the past couple of weeks I have notices banner ads across the top. I just ignore them.

IE is poison. Get Mozilla or Firefox. Since I switched I get zero popups, zero Activex controls, no registry changes or browser hijack attempts, and no adware or spyware. You'll be amazed at how nice it is to have your browser do exactly what you ask it to do -- display a web page -- and nothing more.

On the Mac side, IE is finished, unsupported, totally over. Use Safari.

Ad-aware is a good thing to have on your computer. You can get it from cnet downloads (download.com).

I dig Mozilla.
