Dave, Would it be simple enough to modify the message board to display the IP address that each post originated from? I think that would eliminate alot of the multiple screen name nonsense. Sure, there are always exceptions, like when multiple people work for the same company & have have the "same" external IP address, but I think it would reduce alot of the "ganging up" we see around here? |

I don't think that publicly displaying IP addresses would be a good idea. That would open up a can of worms, But maybe Dave can have a little script that alarms him when people post from the same IP. He could then take appropriate action as he sees it fit. It's his playground after all. |

This is, I guess, one of the fundamental "philosophical" or "theological" questions of this message board. Years ago, Dave pointed out an unfortunate facet of an open board [that] people can and do have multiple usernames. While it is possible to "[w]ith the flip of a switch ... have IP addresses posted next to user names on every message on this board", that might not solve the problem entirely. Apparently, local users of high-speed internet might share IP addresses, and dial-up connections from the same location might have a different IP address with each connection. It may be best to leave us all on our best behavior, except in the rare times that it gets out of hand. Anybody reading a board like this should take into account what they've read in the past from a particular poster. And if the privilege of "screen-name" posting is abused too much, there's always the option of seeking more specific relief from Dave, The All-Knowing and All-Seeing. |

The IPs are logged, but aren't made public because it's a security issue for those on static IPs. And who's to know if two spouses are sharing a computer with different user names? (I can say MHD is wrong about the ones I think he's suspicious of) |

Also, I sign on from more than one place, so I would be one user name with multiple IPs. Which, you gotta admit, is kind of cool. This is the only name I use, although I am considering an alternate identity as "Night Marauder". |

I'd go with "Back Door Man" if I were you, Brian. The other is just too dead on... |

What is wrong with a single poster having multiple on line identities? Why does this thread remind me of discussions of illegal students in school system?

The first time two people who work for the same company post something from work, it will fall apart, because most companies allow internet access only via proxy.
