I have recently been experiencing more and more frequent response delays on this board, which peaked during the day today. I had just about written it off as a modem problem, as my modem has been a bit flaky lately, but tonight it seems to be working fine. Have we been having server problems or could it be heat-related? |

Nope, it's Code Red virus related, but not on our server (we don't use Windows). The virus can flood routers that your ISP may be using. It's tough to say exactly how it works because each attack is different. I'm guessing your home ISP is not same as work, which is why it appears to be working now. This is guesswork. However a few people have e-mailed similar concerns and I've watched the server and it is operating fine. |

I was on the same ISP (home) both times, but I think your explanation fits. I have sometimes gotten "relief" by using a different dial-up access number, since there are several within the local calling area. Yesterday during the day they all seemed to be bad, but last night was better and (so far, knock on wood) today seems better. Thanks! |

Dave, I have to disagree. He is on a dial-up, which would have a very low percentage of traffic coming from any of the code red versions. How much damage could a few ACk's do? As for your side of things, I would hope you are dropping any packets related to default.ida. I know because I am on @home i have been hit 700+ times (in a two day period). It could just be a slow dial up day. These things do happen. It's also important to note about 3:00 is the worst time to be on the web since that is the time the most people in all different time zones are on the web. (I kid you not ) -enigmabomb- Also dave, i couldn't get PHP working on OpenBSD which is a bummer because a friend gave me a script he wrote to parse apache log files and count code red attempts. |

Enigmabomb, I don't know enough about this type of thing, so I guess you might be right. However, if it floods a router, that would effect everyone up and down that chain, right? (Maybe Curmudgeon can elaborate, as I know he experienced the Code Red virus and would have a better idea.) On PHP, if you have a linux partition, install it there; it used to be a real pain, but it's gotten a lot easier. |

All I can say is that it seems to be back to less frequent, intermittant delays. That one day was horrific, and I had the same problem logging on to the same ISP through one of our other computers. I didn't have another ISP to try as an alternative, however. (Work is heavily filtered and monitored, so I can't use that one.) PS - I'm a she. |
