When I post the agendas of TC meetings, I do it by opening up a Word document, copying the entire agenda to the clipboard, then pasting it into the "Add a Message" window. It *looks* fine when i add the message and paste, but when I look at it in the preview I see some odd characters: RESOLUTION ö Participation of Public What ought to be a dash between the words RESOLUTION and Participation looks like an o with an umlaut on the posting, even though it looks fine in the text window. Is this a funny mac vs windows font issue? |

It is a MS Word issue. Something in the character sets. I think it's mostly the "M-dash" and a few other characters. |

Mr. Ryan, I do this often and have the same problem. While I have not found the solution to the problem, I have a work around. I copy from Word, then paste to the "Add a Message" box on MOL. I then click "Preview/Post Message". I scan the Preview and slide down the window to the "Revise your Message" box and delete and replace the character that went wacky. Below that box is the "Preview/Post Message" button which updates the Preview. I scan it again quickly, then click "Post this Message" It takes a bit longer, but I find that it works until I have the time to play around for the "Real" fix. |

Dave: it's em-dashes. Hmm... maybe I could make a macro to go in and change from em-dashes to regular dashes? Or maybe a font change... JG: I had been using that workaround, but there are an awful lot of dashes and quotes in these things. I'm seeking the "real fix" :-) Jerry Ryan |

Looks like another quick fix would be to remove the spaces from before and after the dash. As in: RESOLUTION-Participation of Public SECOND-Roll Call b. Board of Adjustment-vacancies Alt. #1 and Alt. #2 Which while this is not the 'Real' fix it seems to work and it does not look that bad. |

Does the same problem occur if you do the document in Word Perfect (Corel)? |

Here is my hack for this: Use Notepad, or wordpad if you want. They use extremely standard font sets. Macros won't fly here pardner, most virus software will zap them dead. I think they are evil. Also, You might try typing stuff within the add message box? I don't know, it sounds logical enough, and get this, HTML FORMATTING! I believe the key here is the Tools-AutoCorrect dialog box, specifically the "AutoFormat as you type" page. There is a "Hyphens with dash" or something similar option. This is a - normal hyphen This is a normal double -- hyphen This (I think) is an autoformatted ö hyphen This is an autoformatted double ö hyphen |

Enigmabomb: I am posting this here because I am sure you will show up. You seem to be a present day success story for CHS which gets so much flack here on MOL. You seem mature, intellegent with interesting views. I think you should do a "profile" of yourself on that thread. I don't think any teens have done it yet. Thread drift warning! Does anyone else agree? |

Thanks! I try to conduct myself with ethics, ethics which seem to closely resemble hacker ethics. I hadn't intended on making a profile. But, I will make one now. I like Columbia, It's hard to find like minded people there though. A lot of people are into things that I find morally reprhensible (things that law does not find acceptable either). I attribute none of anything to Maplewood Middle School. -enigmabomb- |
