Ok, the new computer has arrived. It comes with Windows XP home edition, in case that matters. The old computer, an IBM Aptiva is running Windows 98. Is there a painless way to port over my photo's, music, and data files? Thanks! |

Buy a USB stick ($30 - $100). Then just plug it in to the old Machine, Copy files to it, plug into new machine, copy files from it. |

I thought of doing that when I switched over from my old Compac about a month ago. Unfortunately, Windows 98 wouldn't support the memory stick! Since my new computer had an extra bay, I finally solved the problem (OK my son solved the problem) by installing my old hard drive temporarily in the new computer and clicking and dragging the needed files from the old hard drive to the new one. When we were done, he reinstalled the old hard drive in the old machine. Brett: Do you know where one can find a driver for a memory stick which enable it to work with a Windows 98 machine? |

If both computers have an ethernet card, why not just get a crossover cable and network the two computers? $8-12

That idea had been suggested by someone in my office. Is there a good site that can walk you through the configuration? |

does the old computer have a cd burner? If so, you can burn the data to a cd/cds. |

It's like the two computers are on a network. I don't use Windows, so I'm not certain of the details, but I guess it would entail setting up one to share files (maybe right click on the drive and look for "properties" / "sharing" ?) |

Does this memory stick work with -GASP Windows 3.1? It's a very old computer that I'm still hanging on to because there are a lot of files I still need on it. I think the computer is from -another GASP at least 1992! Same with my laptop! It has Windos 95, but it's from late 1995. My newest compter is less then a year old... |

Do either of these computers have a USB port which is compatible with a memory stick? If not, it doesn't matter what operating system your computer is using. The memory stick won't work. |

hmmm Joan, I'll have to check later when someone can help me pull out the older desktop. The laptop I think does. I'll check when I go downstairs and let you know later. Thanks! |

Windows 3.1 doesn't support USB. Moving files from a Win3.x machine can be a nightare. The easiest thing do to (though not the cheapest) would be to find some way to connect the hard drive of the old machine directly to the new machine, or find a way to network the two machines. If you need help with this, feel free to contact me directly. I'm sure any of the other geeks here can help as well. |

P.S. - I know you said quick and painless, but if worst comes to worst, I had a computer running 95, 28.8k modem, 1 gig hdd - it was the best machine ever! Anyway, I emailed most of my stuff, and put docs on floppies. There was not anything very huge, anyway. Yahoo email lets you send 10mb attachments, now - and has 100mb of storage. |
