Hopefully someone can help us with a very weird problem: We just purchased a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop running Windows XP. It's connected by a Netgear WG511 wireless adapter to a wireless network run through a Netgear MR314 wireless router.

According to the little connection icon in the lower right hand corner (sorry, I speak Mac, not PC), the computer almost always has at least a good quality wireless connection to the network. HOWEVER, we often cannot connect to the Internet. Sometimes Internet Explorer will open with no problem, and then we'll lose the browser connection (even though the connection icon still says our connection is fine). When that happens, we need to unplug and then plug in the wireless router, and we get the connection back.

Has anyone else have this kind of problem? What can we do?

Wireless networking runs on the same 2.4GHz frequency that cordless (not cell) phones use. Do you have a cordless phone in your house? Do you notice any relationship between usage or ringing of the phone, and the outage?

You should be able to choose in your router configuration software a preferred channel. Usually this defaults to 6. Try setting it to 1 or 11 and see if this helps.

Do you also unplug/replug your modem, or does just resetting the router do the trick? Trying to determine if it's your local network, or a problem downstream with your service (ie sporadic service outage and/or DHCP problem between your router and your ISP).
