My son bought a router to connect the X-Box and computer so he can play Halo online. All was fine until Comcast replaced our modem saying it had been recalled. Now his router doesn't seem to be compatible with the modem. He has asked me to post here to see if anyone can offer any technical assistance. Since I barely understand what I just wrote, I'll be sure to have him read any replies. Thanks! (and thanks to Albatross for suggesting I post here.) |

Does the router give out IP addresses to the xbox and computer? Does the router get an IP address from the comcast? What model router is it? |

mimosa, its very unlikely that the router is not compatible with the modem. please provide more informatino, including how you have this set up. Remember, the modem is what is brining the signal in/out of the house (from the cable/dsl). The router is only distributing it (or routing) the traffic to where it needs to go. |

The router is a Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 and it is connected to the computer, xbox, and modem. All connections are made using a cat5 ethernet patch cable. All lights on the router shows all connections working but a message comes up on the monitor's taskbar saying there is little or no connectivity. I do not think IP addresses are given out by the router or computer and if they are in the past I never had to deal with them. Thanks for any suggestions. (mimosa's son)

My best guess is that the cable is bad between the computer and the router. Swap in another cable to see if it works. The router's job is to give out an IP address, and the fact that a bubble said "no connectivity" or some such, it probably means you're not cabled up. |

also...check that the line going between the modem and the router is in the uplink jack on teh router. You can't just plug it into any old port. I assume you are getting a signal on the cable modem? Does it say "Online"? Is it flashing? It sounds like your xbox and computer are connected to the router. You can check connectivity between your computer and router. The router is acting as a gateway, adn SHOULD assign IP addresses (without you necessarily knowing) to any devices connected in the 1-4 or 1-8 ports. From your computer open up your dos prompt. Try and PING the router: ping 192.168.1.1 If you get a response, you are communicating from the computer to the router. If that doesn't work (No REsponse), then you may have a bad cable. If it does work, try to PING something on teh internet: ping yahoo.com If that works, you should be able to use the web adn other internet services. If not, the problem is either between the router and modem, or with teh modem itself. You should make sure the modem is in the uplink/WAN port on the router, and make sure you see connectivity lights on the modem. |

The connectivity lights on the modem are on when the router is hooked up. The modem works fine when the router is not used and it is connected directly to the computer. The cable from the modem to the router is in the WAN port. If i do get a response when i ping the router then the only possible problem is a bad cable? mimosa's son |

No, it's not the only possibility, but it's the easiest to check and the easiest to remedy (if that's a verb) and therefore, it's the one you should check next. I have spare cables if you'd like to try one. Email me at noglider@pobox.com.
