Internet pictures into iPhoto in iMac

I put them in a folder. I then wanted to tranfer them into my iPhoto Photo Library but it wouldn't work. I tried FILE IMPORT but it doesn't show up. I had to drag it into a separate folder. After this iPhoto would still allow the photos or folder to be dragged. File/Import doesn't work either.
