I'm looking for an iPod like device -- that uses regular replaceable AAA or AA type batteries.

This is as a gift, for use in a place where there will be no way to recharge the device.

Would love to buy an iPod -- did note that Belkin makes a piggy back AA battery pack -- although that makes it very bulky.

Thanks for the help, creative ideas!

Pete

Ok -- but the user is in the hospital -- and cannot have a device that has to be plugged in to be recharged.

Any ideas on devices that work on batteries without anything too complicated?

thx

The cells in that picture are alkalines, like you get at any corner store.

I would venture to guess that no mp3 player is built to handle drug store batteries.

I don't know how easy they are to find these days - the technology has moved on quite a bit... But my Archos Jukebox (mine's 20GB, but they range from 6GB) takes standard AA batteries. It's set up with rechargables, but no reason you can't use standard AAs.

Of course, it's slightly larger than an Ipod and not nearly as sexy, but it also shows up in explorer like another hard drive - no proprietary software required.

Froogle shows a bunch of unknown sites that still carry them:

And I'd bet that EBay will probably have 'em as well - new and used.

Pete - my jukebox has kept me from a complete commuting meltdown for most of the last 3 years. It has its drawbacks when weighed against some of the sexier, more expensive players, but it was the best deal for the $ at the time I bought it. And as far as I know, it's the only one out there that takes AAs. Good luck!
