Our daughter was home over New Years weekend lugging her Powerbook laptop with her. Sitting in our sunroom she could pick up three wireless nodes, none of which were password protected.

What a shame we can't all just share the airwaves. It sure is convenient sometimes to find a little private hotspot and be able to quickly check your email or whatever. With the proliferation of wireless networks it would be fantastic if there were a way to allow others to pass through your access point while reliably maintaining your own security. I'd gladly let others share a little bandwidth so long as I knew they couldn't do any damage.

There are plenty of ways, just keep a firewll on your computer. You can share the airways and protect your machine. |

The problem with sharing your airwaves is, that people can then use your connection to spread viruses, illegally share files, send fraudulent e-mails, etc. All under your IP, so beware. At the same time I agree with argon, it is nice and I do it all the time. Most people don't even change the passwords on their wireless routers, so that you can administer the router, possibly locking the owner of the router out. |
