I'm surprised there were no posts about Apples new announcements. A $499 computer? Cool! A $99 iPod? VERY cool! Looks like they've got a nice new line of toys coming out. It just might get me to switch...

Yes, that is very cool about the new apple. However, the $499 does not include a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or printer. Still a good deal, though...

I'm tempted to get one, but I think 3 Macs is enough for one person.

I think Apple is going the way of Dell, advertising a low price and then getting you on the options.

$100 bucks for a larger hard drive, another $100 for more RAM (the basic only has 256k), how much for a burner?, etc.

Still if you only want to replace the CPU it is tempting.

Bobkat - I think the mini comes with a CD/DVD burner. I read that the target market are people who want to switch from PC to Mac - they already own a monitor, a keyboard, and a printer.

Yes, it has a burner and dvd player. Dell? zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Dell is the one that shows their pcs in ads with monitors that don't come with them, right?

Feature for feature, the Apple is still more expensive than a PC. This is apparent when you load the system up. But for many people, it's money well spent.

I am probably going to buy one of these. Here's the catch. I believe I need 1 GB of RAM. I can get one with 1 GB, though the cost is annoyingly high. But 1 GB is the current max. When they come out with denser RAM, will the system accept it? I recently bought 1 GB of RAM for my old PC, and the PC's design will only let it recognize 512 MB, so I'm out of luck.

If you can recommend a forum where I can ask this question, I'll ask there.

Try: http://www.macrumors.com/

I'd like the increased RAM, too, but find working with 512 on one machine has been just fine.

and you can DIY the upgrade: http://apple.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000917027372/

Apple is now sueing one of the apple rumors sites that got it right. Too bad they are moving away from their fans. These rumors sites are huge free publicity for them.

That suit is not about leaking rumors. ThinkSecret was posting copies of Apple's operating system for anyone to download.

Couldn't figure that out from the article. Publishing code or binaries is of course bad.

For fun, I just read a thread about this on /. seems that apple fans are on the side of apple on this one. It's the apple cult, I believe.

Tom Yager, Tech Director of the InfoWorld Test Center has an interesting opinion piece on Macs. He claims to have migrated completely to Mac and OS X. And he's no Apple cultist. He's from the world of Windows and Unix, but claims Mac servers (and desktops, and storage systems) are easier to manage and as powerful, if not more so, as their *nix and windows counterparts.

He calls moving to the Mac "one of my all-time smartest calls."
