As you may remember from a previous post, I am attempting to update my website (www.composerjohn.com). Can anyone recommend a software program for Mac OS X that can help me design a new, cool looking site? I understand basic HTML - I designed my current site from scratch by myself. I want the new site to streamlined and elegant and be more interactive (if possible). Please give me your recommendations. |

Too bad that you are using the Mac, as you could have used something like Microsoft FrontPage (it may be available for the Mac, but I am not sure). Anyway, how about the whole Macromedia DreamWeaver suite of products. You will get a powerful site editor, plus a Flash development tool. By the way, when you redesign your site, please do not go overboard with Flash. It is a powerful scripting tool, but people tend to go gaga when they use Flash for the first time. |

If you know some HTML, I would recommend that you continue to write the page without the help of an editor. I have tried using a few (although not for the Mac) and found that they do not work very well at all. I usually ended up having to rewrite the page again, and this was not easy because once you start using the program it rewrites all the code to fit the program. I found it easier in the end to just look at the sources for other web site and get ideas. I also learned a lot in the process. |

The industry standard is Dreamweaver, which is amazing, complex to use well and $400. It pays for itself if you have to manage multiple web sites in a day or two. The software you used in 2002 appears to have been updated with CSS capabilities, so why not upgrade to it ($20)? CSS (cascading style sheets) is where it's at now. http://www.optima-system.com/pagespinner/ |
