This message came up last night, caused possibly by accidently hitting the power button twice, instead of once. "STOP, A Wait operation, attach process, or yield was attempted from a DPC routine. Beginning Dump of Physical memory" It sat there on a blue screen for a while, and when nothing happened, I restarted the computer and it's fine. Can anyone explain what that all meant? Thanks. |

Do you have Windows 2000 with a zip drive? |

We are running Win 2000 Pro, no zip drive. There is also a possibility that the new AOL McAfee Virus Scan/Firewall program is having some sort of interaction with the uninstalled Norton System Works/Internet Security programs. The more I read, the more I learned that even uninstalling Norton leaves behind some elements. The Symantec website has several suggestions for totally cleansing Norton. I did do a Google search of "wait operation attach process" and got some interesting results. Thank you for your support.... we're still investigating. The computer (fingers crossed) is running okay, with the blue screen popping up every other day or so.

Did you try using the W2K install disk to repair your installation?

A few years back I worked in a computer lab, doing basic repairs on machines, mostly software related issues. The lab computers all ran windows 2000. The blue screen/physical memory dump issue came about fairly often. I was never able to figure out exactly what the issue was all about. About half the time the computer restarted and the problem never came back. The other half the time the hard drisk had to be formatted and windows reinstalled. If your computer is working alright now I wouldn't worry about it. This problem didn't seem to be one that reoccurred on the same machines. |

It could be a device driver problem. Did you add hardware right before the problem started happening? Or did you start using something after a while of not using it? |

What about memory, did you add any? Did you take any out to see if the problem goes away?

Computer is back to the healthy mode. The AOL McAfee cheap crap add-on was the cause. They offer this "security edition," and one would figure that they keep pretty good tabs on new virus and threats with all those people working there. The problem is they give you a scaled back (designed for AOL users) version of their anti-virus and firewall programs. Then they offer to charge you to upgrade to their more comprehensive version. (AOL pays McAfee a penny or two per subscriber a month for those with AOL 9 Security. So lets see, 20,000,000 subscribers comes out to 4.8 million a year to McAfee) Anyway, totally uninstalled all McAfee components, and bought online, Norton System Works, Norton Internet Security and Firewall. Guess what, computer is humming along just fine! Another reason to say: AOL really sucks. If my cable company offered this kind of service and support, I would be listening to radio! |

Glad to know the story ends happily. How did you figure out it was this software? |

hehe Monster.... as much as I don't like it, its sort of essential with kids nowadays. I did call AOL after installing AOL9 and complained that their download took up (get this!) 400 MB because they bog it down with every piece of garbage they can think of. They're supposed to come out with a light version soon, but until then you have to do it all or nothing. Also, AOL tech support recommended a Norton (Symantec) webpage that was no longer available. So much for out of USA tech support. As for the diagnosis, the computer kept going to the blue screen as it loaded McAfee upon start up. On Sunday morning, it took nine attempts to get up and running, and that's when it was time to start removing programs that had been recently installed. I was ready to strip the AOL off of it completely if removing McAfee didn't do it. I also ran SpySweeper (great trial program at www.webroot.com ) and that showed some McAfee issues. |
