This is really bad!

My 60 slide Power Point Presntation for tomorrow is gone. I worked on it all morning and saved it several times. No it is gone.

However the link still exists under 'My recent documents' but I can't open it.

Believe me: I can't recreate this now so any help is really appreciated. Anybody I can talk to PLEASE?

Search your hard drive for the name of the file.

Did that: wouldn't work.

Used the Windows Explorer which only showed documents with a last saved time of 9:11 AM and none with the file name I used and which shows in the 'My recent documents'. I started working on this after 10:00 and saved many times before 4:00 PM

Unless you wrote over the file, it should still be there. Have you tried running any restore programs?

I wouldn't know how to do that.

I am certain that she didn't overwrite.

This is actually for the wifie-wife who is in tears...

Don't know if this carries over into the Windows world, but on my Mac, I have a directory called "Microsoft User Data" and in it are documents prefixed "Autorecovery save" of recent work. I can go there and locate multiple versions of files I've been working on.

We may have figured it out but I wanted to bounce if off others.

The file is not in the Recycle bin.
It does not show up on any explorer windows
When you click on the file in Recent Docs the error says the network name does not exist.

I created a power point saved and deleted then when I clicked on Recent Docs the error was “Searching for File”
When I clicked on a File that resides on my office server the Error said “the network name does not exist.”

My suggestion was to call the Office help desk to have them help remap the drive. They hook up via VPN.

Any other thoughts.

Do a search of all files and all hard drives for all file using the wildcard *.ppp. All powerpoint files should show, including pointers and actual files, etc.

Is it possible to get a list of all files on the disk and sort by date? Then look at all the most recent files. Or if you can limit your search to all files created today, that would be faster.

Brett, sounds right. If you right click on the link in Recent Docs, you should be able to get it's properties, including it's location. This is is key. It will tell you whether the file was daved locally or ona network drive. It sounds like the file is on a network drive, and now that she's not on the VPN, the drive isn't available. Getting back on the VPN and remapping should work. It doesn't sound like it was deleted.

Let us know what happens...

When wifie came to the office in Pennsylvania and hooked her laptop up to the network - BING - there was the presentation. She had a good three hour meeting and her presentation was well received.

Thanks a lot everybody. And special HUGE thanks to Brett who really helped a lot.

Wifie in tears and the kids in tears because mummy is in tears is nasty, I can tell you!

Thanks again.

Glad it all worked out. I was 99.9% sure that would happen.

It's .1% that had me worried too.

Does your wife understand the problem and how to make sure it doesn't happen again?

She needs to save a copy of the file locally (to her C: drive) if she wants to work on it from home. Alternately she needs to get access from home to her VPN at work.
