Connection Trouble

I recently moved a computer to another room, but haven't been able to get a connection using the new phone outlet (which does work in terms of phone service). I've run a superlong phone wire to the former outlet, and it works. So that I don't have the wire running down the length of the foyer, might someone please tell me if there is a way to get the new phone outlet to work for my Internet connection? Is this something the service provider might be able to fix over the phone? I hope I am being clear. They would certainly prefer that to visiting you. With DSL, you should plug your DSL modem directly into a phone jack without a filter. (You know what a filter is, right?) All other jacks should have filters plugged into them. Then you should plug phones into those filters.
