Is it worth upgrading my iMac G5 from OS X 10.3.9 to Tiger? Do you find yourself using the new features?

there have been a few problems reported, an app here or there may not launch.
The major thing is a problem with Mail, if you have a lot of emails stored, you may find that they are all gone after the install. There is a fix to get them back though.

I haven't upgraded yet though, I tend to wait a little until some of the bugs are worked out, but I've heard good things about Tiger.

I should also have mentioned that you should repair permissions before, and after if you are doing an upgrade, instead of a clean install.
If doing an upgrade, make it an archive and install, do a little maintenance before hand, backup the drive if you need to, and if you have Tiger, just do it....

For backing up my drive I still like "Carbon Copy Cloner", http://bombich.com/
For maintenance I use a couple of different apps,
"Cocktail", http://www.macosxcocktail.com/
"Maintain", http://homepage.mac.com/mar0588/maintain1/Menu16.html
"AppleJack", http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
"MacJanitor", http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html , or make your own script for running cron's, http://www.macworld.com/2003/12/secrets/handson/index.php

Yes, I have upgraded.
I have been using Dashboard mostly to check stock prices, and the weather.
Dashboard will only get better as people develope more "widgets".
Spotlight is incredible, I just haven't found much use for it yet. You can search your entire drive inside all of your files in a matter of seconds.
I haven't used automater yet.

The new version of mail has a new interface with a cool feature for sending pictures. (I have to give credit to my father for showing me) When you attatch an image to an e-mail, the program now offers the option to change the size of the photo for you.
Very handy for those of us who attatch images form a digital camera and used to have to shrink them with other programs to be an e-mail friendly size.

Overall I have been happy with tiger, I just don't know if the cost of the upgrade is worth it.

We have, on our laptop but not our main computer. No problems yet.

Hey, while I have you Mac heads here: I need to buy a font management program for my iMac, since I'll be using it primarily for freelance design work now. (It was our photo/music/internet computer before and dumping fonts into the system folder was fine.) We had Font Reserve at work and I hated it. Anyone use Suitcase running on OSX?

I haven't installed it yet, but will shortly. Having looked at the upgrade at my friends home and drilled him about it on the surface it seems like a boring upgrade. The only things you notice that are different are Spotlight (which is pretty amazing, but it is really just a faster search engine), and Dashboard (which already existed as Konfabulator). So at face value it seems sorta lackluster. But, and their always is a but, it's actually faster. Tiger will make OSX finally seem zippy. It will be like getting a hardware upgrade without buying a new machine. Also almost all of the software was tinkered with a bit, also making them faster too. So I think Apple has done a VERY good job with this upgrade. It would be nice if they started making the Finder better though. OS9 has some features that were better than the OSX Finder. I was pretty disappointed with OSX when it launched. In fact I thought it was Beta software until 10.3. With this upgrade OSX seems to be showing off. Apple can finally brag it has the best OS on the planet.

My good friend uses Suitcase for OSX (with Tiger) and likes it. I seem to remember it have some glitchy conflicts with some apps but he swears by it.

Most typographers seem to use Font Agent.

Does Suitcase have a search feature yet?

I have been using Tiger for a couple of weeks, now. Opening folders and moving files around is noticeably faster. Spotlight is amazing. Dashboard widgets are fun but nothing revolutionary. Mail has lost some features I liked, or at least was used to.
I would say Tiger is way over-hyped by Apple; it's not going to change the way you perceive OS X. It's a way for them to add to their bottom line. On the other hand, it is probably better in certain technical ways. Apple already has a new version out, 10.4.1, a small download off the Web.
