OK, this is a bit long please bear with me.

Almost since I got my current computer (running XP Pro) I've had hardware installation problems. I think something weird happened way back when I hooked it up to all my stuff. Often whey I attach a new peripheral (printer, PDA, iPod, etc) it does not install properly. I can usually fix this by going into device manager and manually installing the driver. But I just got an external USB harddrive and I can't get it to work. It shows up in device manager but not in my computer. I've tried their customer service (Iomega) with no luck. The source of the install problem seems to be that the computer thinks it is in the middle of installing something. If I go into control panel and click on Add Hardware I get an error message that there is in install in process and it has to be finished before I can start another one. I'm sure there is some file or registry entry I could delete or change that would convince it I'm not in the middle of an install. Anyone have any idea what it is? Or any other suggestions. Thanks.

Have you eliminated any obvious potential problems that could be running on your PC?

Virus Scan
Adaware (downloads.com)
Spybot (downloads.com)

Thats where I would start.

Could there be something legit running in the background? Shut down all your applications, then check the process tab after hitting Ctl-Alt-Del.

I would try going into the device manager and removing devices that are not installed correctly.
Reboot with them hooked up one at a time, and see if that does it.

I have virus, spyware and adware scanners. Everything, except the external drive, is installed fine now. I have tried disconecting everything and just connecting the external drive. No luck.

often times those USB devices don't want you to use the MS add hardware wizard and provide a disk. I presume you followed the instructions correctly?

What error message did you get? Alot of times if you can capture the exact message, and google it (in quotes), it will take you to usually a message board where someone is having the same problem. Have you tried that?
