I'm talking to this company about consulting at one of their clients and I was wondering if they were reputable, etc. Of course they want to pay me x dollars and hour and charge the client 4x.

Did you learn of them on dice.com? That's where I did, only a few days ago. I was wondering also. If you find out, please let the rest of us know. 4x sounds very high.

They are located close to where I moved away from, a place that has bad memories for me.

Tom,

I didn't mean 4x literally, I just meant they would mark up my rate. Marking up my rate is not really an issue. It's driving down the rate *I* get that worries me. I work directly for the client now and there's no one takin' a piece of my hourly. But, work here has slooooowed and I ned a new gig.

Did you mean that you found THEM specifically on dice.com? The way I found them was this: They posted a consulting requirement to a technology-specific Yahoo group I'm in and I responded.

Dice sends me an email every day of job listings that match my skills. This company had one.

I can't speak for this company specifically, but I'm leary of any company that doesn't have it's own domain.

I agree with woodstock. Not only do they not have a domain name, but they are an IT consulting firm. Doesn't mean much, but something to watch...

Please make sure that, when you sign the contract, all i's are dotted and all t's are crossed.

One thing that a lot of the small consulting companies (ie: body shops) are doing now is "forgetting" to pay your last invoice. Do not sign a contract that requires you to go to arbitration... going to arbitration often costs more than your final invoice.

Also, watch out for any consulting company where the recruiter always communicates by cellphone. make sure that this company has an actual office... ask to see it. I see that this company is based out of Edison.... there are many fly-by-night consulting companies out of Edison that are actual subcontractors to larger consulting companies.

Thank the lord that I am now working for a great consulting company now.

By the way, if anyone knows a killer J2EE developer with SQL and financial services experience, we need one for the development stage of the large system that i am architecting.

You remind me of my previous boss. He made me sign all sorts of stuff in a giant contract, and I was an employee! Sheesh. He did put the arbitration crap in, and not only that, he stipulated the venue would be Palm Beach county. That would cost him nothing and me a ton.

I managed to get some of the nonsense out, but not all of it. Glad to be out of there. He said he was merely protecting his interests. What he didn't understand or acknowledge was that, by the nature of the relationship, he already had his foot on my neck. In trying to protect his interests, he was also handcuffing me and holding a gun to my head. At least that's how it felt.

magma...that sounds like the perfect job for me, thing is, I am employed and really like it. Unfortunately we are not using J2EE on my project, but a hellovalotta SQL.

What sort of experience are you looking for. I have someone in mind...you can PL me if you'd rather...

Rick B,

The person who I am looking for needs to fully understand and be able to develop and configure BEA's WebLogic 8.1. The person needs to be great at J2EE, and understand something of JMS and Message Briven Beans (MDBs). The person should understand object oriented concepts, and be a self starter.

The project is for a financial application for one of the Mega financial banks. It is a two-tiered system, using a Microsoft .NET client and a J2EE backend. Communication is done through an enterprise message bus, using Tibco EMS.

I am also looking for a killer .NET/C# person, as I am doing the overall architecture and not doing much (if any) coding.

Even though I work for a 800 person consulting company, all our the .NET consultings are are other projects.

Thanks
