The Verizon bill has crept up lately from $65 a month to $70 - not a huge increase, I know, but it only includes DSL and local calling. We use a calling card that's very reasonable for long distance - even local long distance. We're also paying $45 a month for my husband's cell phone, and now that I'm in business for myself, I think I need my own cell phone too. We're forgoing any cable whatsoever right now. Should I put up and shut up, or is there a cheaper way?

We have unlimited phone (local, long distance, regional) and dsl with verizon and we pay about $95 a month when all is said and done. I was thinking about switching plans with them, but doesn't sound like I would do much better based on what you're reporting, especially since I often call my parents in bergen county and my husband at work in nyc. We do get some sort of discount for having phone, dsl and cell with verizon. I am thinking about switching to one of the internet phone services, but still a little worried about consistent service, based on reports from others.

If you do get a cell phone, go for a second line on your husband's phone- I think we maybe pay $50 a month for our two cell phones together- only 500 minutes, but since we get free calls to each other and other verizon customers, plus free evenings and weekends, it's enough time for us.

We don't have cable either and most people think we're crazy- glad to see I'm not the only one!

No cable TV here either! Had it for a while about 5 years ago...Total waste of money!

I pay $109 a month for phone with unlimited local and long distance, high-speed Internet, cable TV with a dozen movie channels. All through Cablevision. Quality of each is fantastic.

The one thing I don't like about phone service through Cablevision (and I would guess VoIP providers) is that you're not listed in the phone directory. While this might be a blessing for some, I have friends that started using Cablvision's phone service, and I kept forgetting to write down their number. So I couldn't call them because no one had their number listed anywhere.

Get Verizon VoiceWing (VOIP)-29.95 for unlimited, "dumb down" your regular Verizon line to just call forwarding -- $20 (inc tax) and keep DSL $29.95. You will end up with unlimited calling, cheap int'l and two phone lines (plus none of the 911, alarm worries because of the "dumb" line) -- all for about $80/month. This is what we do -- VoiceWing is great and has a lot of cool features that you can't get with regular service. Having two lines is huge for us because sometimes we both work at home.

Verizon's VoIP service is consistently rated as overpriced, and the most expensive among the options while not offering the best features and quality.

But I agree in concept with what you're saying.

i had vonage and actually switched to Verizon VoiceWing --- while it is slightly more expensive (about $5) ---it has much better features (so I am not just reading about the two -- i actually have used both). the online address book rocks, the simultaneous ring is a lifesaver, and the ability to schedule the call forwarding is rather unique. So for the features I use most, it is the best and I trust it because it is from Verizon. Mine works like a charm.

Glad to hear it's working for you. Really. As I said, the reviews are different, but reviewers come into this stuff with biases. And most important, I agree with the concept of keeping a minimalist voice line, and using VoIP as your main line.
