Definitely. What operating system do you have? What drew you to AOL? It has the most ads and charges the most money. |

I am on Windows XP, I only picked AOL because I am entitled to 6 months free with my computer. What would you recommend? |

I gather you are sticking with Verizon DSL for basic connectivity. I think that's fine. Their email stinks, as you have discovered. I think gmail (google mail) is excellent and suits most personal needs. It's free! Email me at noglider@pobox.com and I'll send you a gmail invitation. You can't sign in by yourself yet. I assume they will let people do that eventually. |

You never really needed the Verizon software in the first place. It sets up the DSL connection and then it takes you to a web page. You have have the operating system do the former for you. You don't need the latter at all. Better yet, I recommend getting a router to set up the connection for you. A router is also useful as a firewall, to protect your computer from the bad guys. It also allows you to share your DSL with other computers in your home. That may not be important to you. If you think you might get a laptop, get a wireless router. To have Windows XP set up the connection for you, follow this: http://www.carricksolutions.com/windowsxp.php#1 Be sure to store your userid and password somewhere on paper. |

I have verizon dsl as well. I needed the software at first to setup the westell modem/router that verizon sent. They have completely automatized the setup so it is foolproof but you need their software installed to do it. Once I was setup, I uninstalled the software. I didn't have any problems checking my mail, it would just pop up when I rebooted and was annoying me. That said, once my router lost configuration and I needed to install the software again for configuration - so don't lose the disk. Have you tried uninstalling the software through the control panel? |

I have the same modem (westell) and attached to it is a dell wireless router so I can have 2 computers on line at the same time. I thought I had deleted the verizon software yesterday, but i am still getting a header that say "microsoft explorer porvided by verizon online" at the top. I would like my computer set up like Kevin's - how can I do this?

The "provided by Verizon Online" is meaningless and benign. You can ignore it. You can update IE which might get rid of that message. You probably should, since there are often updates for IE. To do that, go through the Windows Update procedure. In IE, pull down "Tools" and then choose "Windows Update" and follow the directions. Better yet, stop using IE and try Opera (from http://www.opera.com) and Firefox (from http://www.mozilla.org). You will like them very much. They are both free downloads. Opera puts unobtrusive ads in the corner of the browser, which you can get rid of by buying Opera for $39. I never do that.

What you have is a customized version of IE from verizon. Microsoft has a tool for companies and ISP that allows the setting of all sorts of options in IE. It is very hard - if not impossible - to get rid of. I've been doing this for 7 years at work and it is pretty slick because everyone's IE is setup the same. As Tom says it shouldn't cause you any problems and if it does switch to another browser - like firefox. I typically use both browsers because I use several sites that don't support firefox. Does your email work now that you have removed the verizon software? |

I won't know if I am receiving until my client tries to email me. Since they are in Sweden they are probably home now. I still don't understand how verizon was able to block my netscape account as well as my verizon email accounts. I have also installed the opera browser. How can I tell if verizon is completely removed? |

campbell29, if you email me at noglider@pobox.com, I can email you back so you can tell if email is working for you. The verizon software may be benign, so removing it may not matter. Installing Opera or Mozilla won't remove Verizon software, but as I say, that probably doesn't matter. |

Now I do - it arrived at 10:13 this morning. But at least it got here. Is there any way to see what is getting caught in the spam detector? I thought I had turned it off. I can't seem to get emails from my clients but can somehow seem to receive every penis enhancement solicitation ever created |

I don't know about Verizon's spam catcher. They may or may not have one. And I certainly don't know about what spam catcher runs on your system. I will, however, reiterate my recommendation to stop using Verizon's email. Tell your correspondents about your spiffy new gmail address and start using it. |
