I'd like to upgrade our family's internet access from dial up modem (yes, some of us still have it) to either cable or dsl (or something on that level.) As you may be able to tell, I'm not familiar with how they compare, or what companies do this well. (We do not have cable TV, but if doing this all in one package would be good, we'd get it.) I currently have AT&T worldnet service, which is good, and they are offering DSL service. Any ideas and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. yours, Jonathan Ben-Asher, calling from the 13th century. |

I've tried both and prefer my current provider, Cablevision, over Verizon DSL. The problem with DSL is that if there is some interruption or bleep in the communication line you go down. My experience showed that bleeps were way too frequent for my liking. I don't have that problem with cable. Hope this helps. |

I prefer cable modem, but it's not a strong preference. I switch back and forth to get the best rate. In the end, it's not that big a decision. Whatever you get, be sure to get a router. I believe Verizon gives you a combination router and modem. Cable modem is faster, but the difference matters to only a few people. I am generally a speed demon, and I found DSL is pretty much fast enough. |

I prefer cable, but if I had a phone line in my house (just use cell phones) I would get DSL instead. Not a huge difference, and you save about $15-$20 a month. Cable will be faster, but since you are upgrading from dial-up either one will be quite a dramatic improvement. |

Sounds like DSL is your best bet. The price is good. I think it's only $25/month now. No new wiring, no surcharge for not having cable TV. BUT! Don't use Verizon's email! It has a lot of problems, and customer service is bad. Use gmail or some other portable service. gmail is good and free. |

This is good advice for anyone, but especially anyone using cable modem service - make sure you use passwords on your login accounts. If you don't use an account - start! PM me for details if needed. |
