I already use Spybot, Adaware, and Norton. Considering my less then 1 1/2 year old computer is now destroyed due to a virus, and the laptop I just bought Sunday seems to have a virus, I am lookiing to take extra precautions. Especially since I plan to start using a wireless connection when I can get it set up. Does anyone know anything about the software listed below? Anyone have any suggestions of their own? I don't know how this happened, especially since I dont open links. www.lavasoft.de/support/download www.safer-networking.org http://www.eblocs.com www.pestpatrol.com www.webwasher.com/client/home/index.html?lang=de_EN www.webroot.com www.noadware.net www.spykiller.com

In the past spybot S&D at safer-networking has gotten the best reviews. I've used it for over a year without problem. Best of all it is free!!! |

I think if you get the paid version, it will auto update or something. I doubt you really need to use more than one or two anti-spyware products. And I actually like the Microsoft product. I loaded someone's PC afresh recently. I used AVG anti-virus, since it was free. Did test it extensively. It's gotten good reviews. So has lavasoft. |

Microsoft Anti-Spyware (Beta). I was a non-believer at first, but became a devotee when it discovered a spyware app on my work machine that all the others missed. |

I use M$ Anti-Spyware, AVG, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, and Spy-Bot Search & Destroy, rally haven't had any problems. A computer at work had pop-up hell recently, and none of those above would remove the problem, it would be found, but not removed. I finally got rid of it (actually there was more than one instance) by using Ewido, http://www.ewido.net/en/ Since then I've been trying it out, and I like it. |

I use Ad-aware and Spybot at home and work, along with Norton Anti-Virus. They usually complement each other, but every-now-and-then the gloves have to come off and I have to edit registry settings because the anti-spyware software won't clean them. It is very tedious work, but due to custom apps, some of my PCs at work are actually easier to clean than to reconfigure. Anyway, make sure you're not hooking up to some sort of peer-to-peer file sharing network. That is usually a big no-no. |

I run a suite of Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, and Avast! antivirus. Occasionally, say once every 3-4 months, I'll pull up the process window and just do a look to see if there are any strange-looking processes running. You can usually do a google search on the name of the process running and quickly discern whether it is benign or not. PS Running wireless does not significantly increase your exposure to virus, spyware, etc. Your always-on connection to the internet is a far greater threat than the limited range of your wireless router.

Whoa by the way you don't say why you think you have a virus in the first place. What's going on?

Microsoft anti-spyware is the best preventative spyware product on the market. It's always running in the background and keeping the evil spyware away. Try it...it's free. |

Thanks all! I forgot I started this thread. My computer had problems for a couple of weeks; but Norton didn't catch anything. Whatever came up on Spybpt, Adaware, or Medicregistry was easily fixed. Even ran all the extra Norton stuff like I do once a week. Well, a couple weeks ago I just finished running everthing as I usually do. Everything was fine. I then ran out to take care of some things. When I came home two housrs later my computer had this strange system message. I tried and tried, but I couldn't get it to reboot. Tom R, one of the people I reached out to for help, thought maybe I could reboot it off a CD ROM, so he lent me one to try. It didn't work. The computer is now at Circut City, where it's been the last week or so. At first I was told it's most likely hopeless, but they'd try. Then told there may be hope. As of Friday, we're back to being hopeless. I broke down and bought a new computer - a HP pavilion laptop with an 80 gig hard drive adm 64 Athlon processor (whatever that means), some kind of useless digital media slot, who knows what else and a 17 inch monitor. oh and an external floppy drive. Norton picked up a bunch of things I couldn't get rid of at first. They are now gone. This computer will be too after tomorrow. I think. I think it's to big. Laptops are supposed to be smaller. I like the case though. |

JTA: Did you load any files (including back-up files) from your first computer into your second computer without checking first to see if they were infected with the problem that caused your first computer to destruct in the first place? If not, this may be the cause of your current problem with the new computer.

Never, ever, ever, EVER EVER EVER buy an HP/Compaq laptop. They're useful as doorstops but not much else. |

Joan- No, nothing from my old computer has been put on the new one. Whatever it was came on the laptop. It had something to do with AIM. Luckily I was able to correct that problem. Bets- Now you tell me. |

I've been warned that a lot of computer viruses are now being transmitted over AIM, just one of the reasons I disabled it on my computer. Glad you were able to correct the problem.

Regarding the AOL Instant Messenger attacks: Just say NO! When the program is installing, it asks lots and lots of questions, which are actually permissions to install tracking programs on your PC. You're giving permission by clicking ok, yes, I Agree. Read The Screen before clicking. Just say NO!! (and in this case, don't include "thank you"). |

Oh, and don't clink on links sent to you by AIM buddies. It usually isn't the buddy sending it to you (it means they've been attacked). Verify every link sent through e-mail and AIM. Don't click the links!! Just a little friendly advice from someone who knows... Bets |

Thanks for the heads up about AIM Joan. Monster- Thanks for the offer to help with my expensive paper weight. lol It's not my laptop they have, it's my year and half old desk computer. The laptop seems to be okay. I'm not having good vibes about the compuer Circut City has. Both the manager and guy fixing it knew I'd be in about 3pm today to get it. Luckily I called ahead of time because BOTH of them had off! This, after telling me not to let the computer leave the store without the manager (Mark) checking the computer geek's work. Tom R and Sheena offered to help me set up the router etc when (IF) I get it back! If they aren't available for awhile, maybe you can help. I'm keeping the Norton onthe laptop. I'm having second thoughts agreeing to the MaAfe on the computer they have. Mark told me if I didn't like it I can return it. Bets- I don't normally click on links unless I know for sure where they came from. Nobody was even here when the problem occured. I found it when I got home. Don't forget to give me the heads up for tomorrow-k? |

JTA: If recovering the data on the computer is all you care about, I can help you recover it. Then, the harddisk can be reformatted, OS and apps re-installed. New hard disk (or old). I can also give you a hand with Wi-Fi setup. As for the computer getting infected while connected, never leave anything logged in. No, better yet, never leave your computer connected to the Internet if you are not going to be using it. You can setup a router to disconnect your computer after a pre-determined amount of time. It will only take a few seconds to reconnect once you get back to it. Also, once you get your computer up-and-running again, you should consider loading firewall software to it. I have a router/firewall, but I also use BlackIce firewall software on my PC to stop anything that may get past the router. Call me paranoid. |

My computer appears to have a virus too. I didn't have any problems until my daughter started IM'ing her friends. Now I have all these different processes running and can't get rid of them. I have spyware. It seems like it locates it, says it is gone then it is back again! It keeps saying my virtual memory is low and it doesn't even have enough memory to go into Encarta. the web address keeps saying www. central media.com. It is driving me crazy. My computer is fairly new. I hate to think it is shot. Anyone else have a similar problem? Spyware seems to have cleaned most of the popups, but this will just not go away. Any thoughts? Thankfully I have a lap top that the kids are banned from! |

There are some excellent free tools at www.symantec.com as well as at www.microsoft.com. At the MS site, look up "malicious software detection". At Symantec, just poke around and you'll find a whole bunch of great stuff. |

If you are using internet explorer, stop using it.Use fire fox instead. It's free and I've never had a problem with spyware since using it. |

Sice this thread has been resurrected, I've been using Ewido along with AVG, AdAware, Spybot S&D, and MS's beta solution. I've found that Ewido finds and gets rid of a few items that the others don't, and am liking it more and more. http://www.ewido.net/en/ |
