I have used Norton for the last few years and have generally not had any problems with it, save for the noticeable slowing of my machine, especially on startup of Windows. However, my subscription expired and when I started looking at upgrading the software (which I have always found to be the same or cheaper than renewing the subscription), I found that many people (on Amazon) complained about NAV 2005. So, I started doing some research and found good reviews on CNet for TREND MICRO PC-cillin Internet Security 2005. Does anyone know anything about it? I know some of you have recommended AVG, but I can't find any commercial reviews of it. For the record, I have a DELL Inspiron 8100 (laptop) with Windows XP Home Edition. Thanks. |

I have always liked Norton the best, but Grisoft is really doing a great job with AVG which is free. |

http://www.avast.com Free for personal use. Automatic updates are issued quite frequently. Has caught several viruses before they infected my machine(s). |

Thanks, all. I'm still kind of leaning towards the PC-cillin. With a rebate, it's only $10 at newegg, and it seems to have good reviews from more than one source. I'll try to post back with my own opinion on it once I get it installed. |

I'm using PC-cillin Internet Security and while it's basically a very good product, there are some quirks. For example, when I tried to set the firewall to "Wireless Network" I was blocked from communicating with my other computer. I had to change it to "Home Network" and then beef up the security level a little. I also had to (with the help of Tech Support) add a registry value to extend the timeout period for it to try to update itself on startup. My 2nd computer is slow and it was always timing out on me and giving up. The last time I read reviews, McAfee had the highest virus detection rate but the software was so buggy that they could not recommend it. |

I'm a big fan of Grisoft's AVG, mentioned above. Very stable, not a resource hog, and, as an added plus, completely free.

Well, I went ahead and bought the PC-cillin, but before I uninstall Norton and install the PC-cillin, I am long overdue for a system backup, so I'll be starting another thread on that. I have yet to figure out a good solution to that problem. |

I was told last night by the computer geek at Circut City the best way to go is McAfee. I had used Norton for several years with no problem, until a couple of weeks ago when it appears my computer was attacked. I was going to post a note asking about this but it seems my question was answered. Thanks Jasper! The most important thing is no matter what you use check often for updates. |

Norton Internet Security is the best protection that you can get. All of the applications have a chance of letting a virus through but Norton has been the leading product for years. |

Norton is OK, but I would stay away from McAfee. Okay, I would stay away from both Norton and McAfee, over the last couple of years I've heard about too many instances where one of them has done more harm than good. You really need to medicate with a cocktail, now days it takes more than one app to keep a pc healthy. See this thread, /discus/messages/3137/71162.html?1118630919 |
