Just polling to see if anyone knows of good remote connectivity software. Not so much the kind you would use to connect from other locations (like WebEx), but perhaps more of the type you might use on your own home network. Remote Desktop would be great, but I am going from XP home to XP home. Not possible with the inherent tools. Basically, I am thinking of moving one of my PC's to a different floor and only accessing it remotely (unless I have to go there). I have used PCAnywhere in the past, as well as a product called VNC. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks. |

Those are good. I hear that so is GoToMyPC. Another one of those good products with a stupid name. |

Have you thought about upgrading one of the computers to XP pro to allow you to connect to that computer? Just a thought. You can find some websites that sell XP pro upgrade CD's for $50 or so. It is easy, it works well, and it could be the cheapest option.

I'm a huge fan of VNC (I use RealVNC and TightVNC). It's pretty easy to set up, espeically if you primarily use it on a home network. Set it up as a service, and you're done. Use any VNC client (or the java cilent) and it's as if you are right on the other machine. There can be a bit of latency, but if you drop down the colors to 256, and turn off certain window polling features, you can clean up quite a bit of that slowness. But as with any task, the real question should be, what do you want to do with this remote access? |

I have been trialing RealVNC for the past few days now and am pretty happy with it. Really what I want to be able to do is control the other PC. I am using it as a type of media server, so most of what is being done does not require me to log into the server, but as long as I can get on it remotely that should be great. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. |
