...why I hate the PC.

I can't get this simple thing. Burn a bunch of standard MP3 files onto a cd. I've done it before. It's worked in the past. Now it won't. I am smarter than the average bear when it comes to the computer, so if I can't make it work good luck to grandma and grandpa. So far I have wasted about an hour of my time and many cds. I tried twice to send the files to the CD burner and use the stupid wizard. And then I tried making a playlist in iTunes and burning it that way. Nothing works.

As a comparison, on my Mac. I would have dragged them onto the CD and the thing would have worked the first time.

Windoze is an inelegant piece of poop. And that's me being NICE!

Alley-
I hate my PC too!

Have you tried to reboot? Maybe a program is stuck?

<shrug> Windows worked for me - I even cancelled the wizard and dragged the files to the CD, still did it. I don't think it's the OS, think your problem lies elsewhere.

Rick, 'cause I'm at work. Work = PC. Home = Mac.

Oliver, the only way to test this, would be to get the files home to burn the same tracks on my Mac. But I feel supremely confident it would work. But as you can see this is a chicken/egg dilemma -- since I can't burn a cd to get the tracks home.

I thought about my problem some more over the weekend. I began to think that the CD drive in this machine might be too fast for the media I'm using. While I feel confident I will EVENTUALLY be able to find the feature that let's me change the burn speed, at no time did my PC ask me what speed I wanted to use.

As I stated earlier this wouldn't have been a problem on my Mac. I would have used the same blank cds too (I tried 2 brands). But then I would have to admit that the CD burner on my Mac is a bit slower than the one in this PC. (If I can find the feature) I'll see if a slower speed might do the trick later this afternoon if I have some time.

I find iTunes to be a better way to burn a music CD. There is a control therein for the burning speed.

Not that this is a HUGE issue, but my MP3 player allows me to navigate by way of my directory structure. So I often organize things before I burn them. As you probably know, iTunes burns the tracks as one directory with all the files dumped in as one long list. Provided my id3 tags in my MP3 files are properly organized in iTunes, I can have iTunes reorganize the files on the next computer I copy them too, but this is an annoying, uneccessary extra steps, requiring duplicating files on my HD, and changing settings in Itunes a few times.

Also, I used iTunes to burn this cd in question, and it made a bad burn too. But for my test, I'll try using iTunes to do the burn at a slower speed. Thanks for the heads up As-hat.

I also figured out how to configure the burner on the OS level, and set the speed to 8x and it worked.

My original point, that grandma and grandpa PC user would be lost at sea if this problem occurred to them.

Ooh, ooh, tell me how to set the burn rate. This is Windows XP, right?

I take your point about grandma and grandpa. It boggles my mind that they manage to get any work done with Windows.

my grandma and grandpa don't download files off of Itunes and then try to burn them onto CDs. They mostly go to webMD.com
