All you have to do is ask... I did this after someone telling me that they had. Call up Verizon Tech Support (1-800-567-6789) and say that you're not sure that your DSL speed is as fast as it can be. They will ask you to run a speed test at their website (an accurate one, not skewed to them), and will probably come out around 600kbps. They will explain that you're on par for a 768kbps line. Ask them if your line can support a higher speed; maybe bring up that their advertised speed is 3.0mbps; the technician can check the availablility of the service while you wait only a couple of minutes. (Our line was capable of 1.5mbps; 768k, 1.5m and 3m are the available speeds.) The techie will give you the results. Ask how you can change your service and the techie should forward you to the department that handles the service itself; they will upgrade it while you wait, no charge at all for the change or on the bill (I asked). Our speed was doubled in 15 minutes. I suspect that running the lowest speed reduces the strain on their equipment, and since you have to ask, only a limited number of proactive people isn't a big drain. (I may call back in a week and see if the line can handle 3MB ) |

I did this because I was having trouble video conferencing now I am at 1.0mb when I do the speed test. What would make the line go up to 3MB? would they have to do another upgrade? They told me they were upgrading but actual speed depends on the specific line. |

I presume that they upgraded you from 768k to 1.5MB... if the line can;t handle 3MB for whatever reason, i don;t know that there's much they can do. I'm going to call back in a couple of days and see if 3MB is mysteriously able to work on the lines, because I trust Verizon no farther than I can throw them. |

Actually speed has to do with distance from the CO, if you want to check how far you are the website www.dslreports.com has a distance tool (http://www.dslreports.com/prequal/distance). You can use this to be a pain to verizon who have a different standard for minimum distance for service rating. I think they give you a chart.
