I recieved a 20 Gig iPod as a gift and I don't have a reciept or even know where it was bought (probably out of state for that matter). I haven't opened the box yet, cause I would like to trade it for the 60 gig model. The way I see it, I can get a top of the line iPod for just $100 (the difference in price between the 20 gig and 60 gig models). What is not to love?

So I went into the Apple Store in the city to do the return and they scanned the box, and said that the iPod wasn't bought at an Apple store so they won't exchange it for me. They went on to explain that the reason has to do with the purchase date being related to the warranty expiration date, which is tracked by Apple from the bar code on the box on date of purchase. This made me very unhappy.

I thought I would try to do the return at Best Buy or any other electronic store just to see if I get lucky and someone wants my $100. But I suspect I'm out of luck. My friend suggested selling it on Ebay, which seemed like a big hassle to me, and certainly would cost me some more money. Which now brings you up to date, and to me asking for your helpful suggestions.

Anyone have an iPod Photo that they don't need and want to trade for an extra $100 cash and a new 20 gig iPod, still under warranty? Can anyone think of a suggestion on how to achieve what I want? Please note, I have deemed it inaproppriate and impossible for me to contact the person who gave the gift so asking their help in the matter is not an option.

Cmon Monster, I was banking on the fact that you might be on the of the people who could help me.

The person who gave us the ipod isn't allowed to be contacted by anyone. Move on and away from that angle for the solution and help me.

OK-OK, gee whiz, can't a Monster have a little fun.
If you don't have any luck in returning the item to a store of your choice (have you tried Target, without a reciept one can exchange for another item)

Another place you might try is here, http://macswap.org/
this site is owned and operated by a person from another forum I frequent, and I've heard nothing but good things about it.
He also seems to be a pretty decent guy.

Monster Out....

Monster, I haven't tried yet. I keep wondering if they will do what the Apple Store did, and when they scan the bar code see that it wasn't bought at their store. If I can't find a store to do the return, then it might be macswap for me after all.

I went to a VERY popular large electronics store near us. Their policy was to NOT accept refunds or exchanges without a receipt. But somehow my wife was able to give the sweet face, and sad story and the guy was willing to do the exchange. So I guess that answers whether those chain stores can figure out whether it was sold at their store by scanning the bar code. I am ECSTATIC about my new iPod Photo with all 60 gigs of it's goodness. Thank you honey for getting and exchanging my ipod. I love you and your the best.

I might feel bad about the exchange but the way I see it, the store would not have taken back the product if they couldn't still sell it (or return it to the manufacturer). It was completely unopened, so I won't be surprised if it goes right back on the shelf. The store got more than $125 from me for the upgrade so they did earn money off the transaction. And my last thought on the matter is that the Apple store was obnoxious for not taking it in the first place. Fudge 'em.

Thanks for the suggestions and help Monster.
