I have seem to have lost control of my PC running Windows XP. I'm pretty good with the tools, however, this is beyond me. I have all the virus scans, firewalls and spyware checkers. The problem is at boot time. Tons of stuff load into the computer. The hardrive runs for several minutes before I can get use of the mouse, and when I do forget being able to do anything for about 5 minutes. The Task Manager does not show any Applications running, and does show 37 Process, with names that mean little to nothing. I remember a sequence that I can do to allow only one step at a time during the boot process, thus allowing me to see what is loading. I forgot how to get to it. Any ideas? PS. This week I stripped the disks, re-formated them, reloaded the Op system and then all the applications and data. It is a tad better, but I still have the problem. |

this page may be of interest, http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,115628,00.asp or this, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/strun.html or this, Go to Start -> Run again, then type 'services.msc'. You should get: This is a more detailed list of processes that are starting up with Windows. All those items with 'Automatic' listed next to their names are booting with Windows. Click on the items to find out just what they do. If you decide you don't need a certain service, you can simply right-click on it and change it's properties from 'Automatic' to 'Manual'. along with the above tip, you can find more helpful tips here, http://webgear.datacreek.net/system/xptweaks.html |

I haven't looked at the links above but the tool I use is msconfig, this will give you a choice of selective startup to choose what gets loaded, you can unload everything and reboot, and then add an item at a time, check google if you are unsure what it does. Most you don't need, many get left over. I try to keep virus checking and any sync software. The otherstuff is just to make the apps load quicker and they usually don't at that. This work with Win2K. As for services you can go the task manager (ctl-alt-delete, task manager) and go to process to look at what is running, again you wont be able to tell what is needed without google'ng it. A word of caution some MS appls run multiple times like svchost, do not stop this service or the process. It may look like a virus, and me be one, but you need other tools to get rid of. In general be really careful about the services, some like print spooler can be stopped if you aren't printing and some are required to run. Be berry berry careful in services but msconfig not so much. |

Sounds like your hard drive might be dying. Get a diagnostic tool, like Maxtor PowerMax http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b0913460 68/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads/ATA%20Hard%20Drives&download ID=113 and run the tests. |

didn't follow the links on this page...but right click on my computer, select manage Look for Services...you have to click down a couple menus, but it lists all the services and shows if they are automatic, or manual. automatic runs at startup. if i have a question about what one is...i usually just google it... |

Jgberkeley, I have the identical problem. I think it's somehow related to the spyware checker I'm running. I'm using Webroot's "Spy Sweeper". I base this on the fact that prior to installing this software, the PC was very speedy on the boot. I haven't tried the obvious deletion to see if it improves because I tend to leave the PC running 24/7, but I feel your pain! |
