There are people who might have copies of the "family pak" of OS X Tiger who might want to give or sell me any unused licenses they have. I believe it comes with 5. That is what I meant. Dave, thanks for your feedback, but you could have left the thread open for the original poster to respond. That would have been nice! I was interested in the iChat AV option. My father bought me a webcam so he could see his new grandson. Perhaps someone here has a way for me to use video chat with my current OS X 10.2.8. Thanks to all. |

Sorry if the phrase "unused licenses" is technically incorrect. I hope everyone knows what I mean! |

Dave, thanks for clarification. I wasn't aware of the regulations. I am sorry for misleading you to think I was a Pirate (although I look nothing like the picture above). Perhaps you know the answer to my question? Is there a way to video chat with my current OS?

System requirements for iSight are on Apple's web site - Macintosh computer with a 600MHz or faster PowerPC G3 or any PowerPC G4 or G5 processor - iChat AV software (Included with Mac OS X Panther) - Mac OS X v10.3 or later - Broadband Internet connection (128Kbps or faster transfer speeds) |

2cats, Have you tried google? here, someone suggests using iChat 2.0? And it appear that Yahoo Chat (for the Mac) does video chat as well. I don't know about AIM on the mac, but it does video chat on Windoze. |

I STILL haven't gotten a good answer to my question. Anyone? I have a webcam already (logitech) so i don't think I need iSight, Dave. I am running OS X 10.2.8. Can I video chat or do I need to upgrade OS? IF I can video chat, can someone let me know what program I should use? I'm not very techy, so any help should please be in easy ABCs. |

You need a version of ichat on your computer. It doesn't have to be the newest version. I'm am sure that there is a version of ichat that ran on 10.28 that supported video conferencing. There you happy. I finally answered your question. Apple used to give it away free. I don't know if they do anymore and even if they did they are trying to FORCE people to upgrade to 10.3 and to iLife so I wouldn't be surprised if they made it so you can't run it on your machine. Is this evil. Yeah Apple can be pretty scummy at times, even I admit it but they are in the business of earning money so I cut them a little slack. Visit the Apple site and read the site. I don't get the sense that you have tried to do this yourself yet. I don't care how techno-illiterate you are, you have to try to do things yourself sometimes. You don't need an isight camera to do what you want on a Mac. If you can't get or have iLife then you need some other chat software that supports videoconferencing. I don't know of any other programs but I know they exist. Try doing a google search with I'm guessing "mac video conferencing" and see what you find. You can also try going to macupdate.com and search for "video conferencing" and see what free/shareware there is. Alternately, you could plunk down some cash and buy the iLife suite like Dave reccomended. You could search ebay and see who is selling a copy. And if you are into the illegal stuff as has been suggested already of you, try the P2P networks such as BitTorrent. At the macupdate site, search for "file sharing". You can get a program called Acquisition that is good. If you want me to give you a step by step lesson on how to illegally get software though, well your just out of luck. Sorry. Good luck with that. |

WOW. I can't believe the tone on this board. I think I might stick to Please Help where people are actually willing to give a little advice and direction. Alley---no need to be so snarky. I was not asking for anything illegal. I have iChat and it does not support video chat, as far as I can tell. I've read the apple site and various other pages, but I thought that I might get some helpful hints before I actually go spend $129 or more on software that I might not actually need. I'm just trying to get some simple advice but that seems to be impossible here. |

I think Dave's was the best hint (As you're running Panther, that would be a useful hint.)

Start iChat. In top menu, go to "Buddies". See the options for Video Chat? That's iChatAV. |

I'm sorry if I come across snarky, but I find I spend TONS of time on this board explaining things to people. I think the LEAST people can do is do a little research before they ask their questions over and over again. Almost all of your questions can be answered with a simple search or two on the Apple site or at the least on Google. Yes it might take you and hour or two of searching and studying. But clearly no one knew the answer to your exact question due to the lack of answers you recieved. If Dave just solved your problem for you in his last post, THEN YOU WASTED MY TIME BY NOT READING THE MANUAL. Are you going to apologize to me? I doubt it. |

Dave, it's not there on my version of iChat (which is of course the first place I checked). Thanks for the response. Alley, I do not owe you an apology. I'm going to end this now because it's ridiculous. |

You're not using Panther. You have Jaguar. Update to Panther or Tiger to get iChat AV. It won't work on Jaguar. |

Twokitties, you should switch to a PC running a nice windows operation. If you do that I would be glad to help you in any way. (I am even let you know ways to get illegal copies of things. Of course, for informational purposes only. I would never condone such actions.) Unfortunately I don't use a mac, and really know nothing other than the very basics of using a mac. But, if you ever make a switch to windows let me know, and I will help you with whatever I can. Also, for the most part, this tech section is pretty good with answering questions, and helping to answer them. |

For the record, I use a Windoze box at work (HATE IT) and know how to use one better than most casual PC users. If I knew the answer to a PC question I would help out. I also am EXTREMELY reluctant to reccomend that a PC user buy a Mac too. The reason being that I don't want to hear that person complain to me that they don't know how to do anything ('cause the switch was too drastic for them). I also don't want to have to be the persons technical support. The theory there being that if I evangelized a Mac purchase to them, that now I am beholden to them forever. I usually tell people to stick with what they know. Unless of course I think the person is cool. |

I still don't have a mac yet. I tell people to buy Macs so that I no longer have to help them, because I can claim ignorance.

You can lose a lot of hours trying to help solve Windows woes. I evangelize Macs because they are way, way, way easier to troubleshoot (and then there's that Maytag repair guy analogy). |

PC/Windows tech/user here, but in reality, I think am a closet Mac lover (gasp, don't let my friends hear that). I have not touched a Mac since 1993 (I think), but I always liked them. Wanna get me a G5, but mortgage, taxes, food, and those pesky and annoying little carbon life forms running around the house get in the way of buying things around here. I need Intervention from a Windows support group. |

Monster: I've seen that GIF animation before. It is rather gross. McCheese: No, not a communist. A technologist (not a Windows-ologist nor Mac-ologist). If I do buy a Mac one day (not any time soon, since I just bought my house in Mapleberry, so, a little tight on the finances), I would keep my Windows machines. |
