Well I finally connected my son's new laptop to a wireless router. I'm proud of myself if I do say so myself. I encrypted it (the default is unencrypted - what's up with that - but that's another thread). The company D-Link was great with a bit of help I needed. It may not have the reviews of Linkys but the customer service here was great.

OK, so it's not the best but on my base old computer I use Nortons AntiVirus and Zone Alarm. What's the best/cheapest way to install this. I declined the Nortons purchase through Dell hoping I could do better on my own. Is there a student edition or coupons or what? Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Yay, wendy!

AVG has a free version of their anti-virus software. http://www.grisoft.com I think I had to google "free AVG download" or something like that to find the free version.

And Windows XP SP2 has built in firewall software.

I really like Avast! antivirus (free and very good. I uninstalled norton in favor of it) and ZoneAlarm (also free) for my firewall (rather than the Windows default).

Add Adaware (lavasoft.com, free as well) and you should be in good shape.

Thanks Tom and Tom. I looked at AVG and it didn't seem it was running in real time. I'll check out Avast!. I checked out some paid ones and it seems the Shield Pro (at only 29.95) was highly rated. I may opt for that. I also thought I would install Zone Alarm too. Does it work ok even with the Windows default?

It's typically at about this time when a very annoying person will jump out and say, "Macs have built-in firewalls and don't suffer from virii."

Fortunately, we can stave off these unfortunate and oftentimes unhelpful posts merely by predicting them.

What is the name of the Mac's builtin firewall, and how do you configure it?

AVG does run realtime protection. In addition to lavasoft, Microsoft's beta antispyware product is actually pretty good. In fact, it's been consistently rated the best free anti-spyware tool (in the magazines I read) since it came out.

Wasn't that the kind of stuff that Microsoft was getting in trouble for including in their OS?

But you don't have to turn it on, and you can easily install and use another firewall solution.

Another antivirus to try on your windows machines is Ewido, found at http://ewido.net
I have found that it will find many things that other anti-virus apps don't.
the next one I like is AVG, like Tom said, google for the free version, or just click here, http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
scroll down and click the download link.

Don't forget Spybot Search And Destroy, along with Lavasofts's AdAware

Another firewall to try besides ZoneAlarm, is Sygate's personal firewall, it's free also, http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm
and I tend to prefer it over ZoneAlarm.

Thanks monster and everyone else. I must have read either an old review for AVG or it was wrong or I misread it. Ewido's site is cool with just that lower case e to click on. That gives it points already.
