I no longer wish to be a part of the MOL community and would like to "unsubscribe" myself, because I'm afraid I won't have the will power to refrain from posting. How do I go about it? Is it a request to Dave and Jamie, or is it an unsubscribe button somewhere?

You can't. MOL is a live sentence.
Even if you can get your account deleted you would still lurk. Admit it.

It's impossible.

And then after you lurked, something would catch your interest or need to be commented on and you'd be back.

But if you are truly serious, email Dave and he can delete your account information.

I'm pretty sure that if he deletes your account, then all of your previous posts are deleted too.

All you have to do is request a change in the e-mail address linked to your MOL account. The moment you do this, your posting rights on MOL will terminate until MOL can notify you at your new e-mail address that the change has been made. You will then have to acknowledge receipt of the notification e-mail. Switch your e-mail address to an address you never check and voila your posting ability will be at an end.

Either that, or post a viscious personal attacck against someone. You'll get suspended.

Once the suspension is over, do it again.

You'll only be posting once a week (or so depending on Dave and Jamie's collective memorry), and each time it will be a unique cathartic experience.

Or, you can tell your browser not to show anything from MOL. However, maybe you'll want to cut out just the Message Board. The rest of MOL is pretty useful.

I like Bill's suggestion the best. Meand, you can just say nasty things about whomever you want for a few weeks until Dave suspends you permanently. It will be a lot of fun for us all to watch.

Like I said, I'm not sure I'd have the willpower to stay away, and here I am back again. I took quite a beating and was absolutely ready to go, but the moment has passed, and I chickened out, and here I am. Oh well.

Maybe I'll devise a twelve-step program for people like myself who are addicted to MOL, and unable to stop ourselves no matter what it does to our lives!

I'll keep you all posted as to times and dates for the meetings! Not!

Meand, I saw MOST of the little skirmish that happened in the babysitter thread, and I'm glad you didn't leave. F-em, that's what I say. Seriously, you would let them win if you left MOL. You would be MUCH better off ignoring them. There are a few VERY WELL meaning people on this board that I won't even respond to anymore. I find them irritating. I generally treat them like I would my co-workers that I despise. I am civil to them, but never nice or jovial with them, and I never get pleasure from responding to them.

If you left MOL you also would give (dare I call them) your enemies a false sense of power. They would think they could run right over the next person. Trust me, when people do despicable things on MOL other people see it. And while it is hard to keep track of each person's screen name with their personalities over time it sticks. Over time the masses know who is gross and who is worth giving another try.

I no longer wish to be a part of the MOL community...

Me, it is a community, isn't it? It's not all about attacks and hypocracy. Sometimes you make real connections and get great advice. And sometimes when the house is quiet it's of comfort to know someone else in town is awake.

Of course, being a confrontation-phobe I certainly couldn't publicly come out in your defense, but I hope you know by now I'm always right behind you (yet a safe distance away).

Welcome back, Me!

Meandtheboys:

There already is a 12 step program for MOL addicts. Nohero posted the details years ago. Check it out in the attic.

Alley, thanks for the pep talk and I know you're right. However, it really felt like this last beating I took was completely unwarrented and particularly vicious--especially since it went on and on even after the original thread was removed and I was pretty much no longer involved. And particularly in light of the fact that several people felt no compunction about dragging my children in to the nastiness. Had this been a face-to-face thing, I'm not sure I wouldn't have just scratched their eyes out. But then again, something tells me these people don't operate this way IRL, because if they did I can't imagine they'd have a lot friends and would probably find it difficult to hold down a job.

The personal attacks directed at me where one thing, and it was my understanding that they are not allowed. Whatever. I know Dave can't be in all places at all times, but I have seen him step in on numerous occassions to make clear that involving people's children in the personal attacks is absolutely not tolerated. It took everything I had not to let loose on every single person who had something to say, and stay away.

I have always tried to be decent in my dealings with people on this board. I have never resorted to name calling or personal attacks, even when the urge was strong. There are one or two people on this board who seem to have it out for me for reasons I can't begin to comprehend, one of whom, IMO, is coming frighteningly close to cyber-stalking.

Las, lately it seems to be a community that operates under the mob mentality of kicking someone when they're down. That's not something I do IRL, and it's not something I do on-line, and I have little respect or tolerance for people who do it in either place. I too, am a confrontation-phobe, simply because I believe it to be inhumane and uncivilized. I also find it very disturbing that there were people who found the whole thing amusing! That's just sick.

There were a few people who understood my position and offered kind words and encouragement, and I thank them for that. I tried to focus on those words, but, unfortunately, the general nastiness overwhelmed them.

Joan, I'll check the archives and see if there's any hope for me.

I just found this proposed high tech solution to your problem in a national magazine article. Supposedly, if you go to a website called e-business webjillion.com you can download a program which will enable you to download a temptation blocker that allows you to list the programs you want to block (don't know if it also block's websites but it seems from the article that it does), set a timer for how long you would like to block them and activate it by hitting a GET WORK DONE! button.

I don't know if it works but if you are really desperate and truly lacking in will power, it may be worth a try.

I was about to suggest webjillion. As far as leaving because of the nastiness, if all the nice people left, the wackos would rule and MOL would scare off all the people who are thinking of moving here. And there would go our property values! Ka-boom! ; )

Half-kidding aside -- Me, don't leave. I'd miss ya.

meandtheboys, I can suspend your account no problem if you wish. Just let me know when.

Alleygator, deleting an account will not delete all previous posts.

meandtheboys, find what's important in your life and devote your time to it.

That's what I hope to do. It's how I deal with addictions, and I have a very addictive personality.
