I just purchased a new external hard drive to back up my internal hard drive. The external drive came with software called Retrospect. Is this software as good as Ghost or should I also install Ghost for doing the back-ups?

Retrospect for true backups and synchronization,
Ghost for drive imaging.

So when I copied the full contents of my F drive to my G drive using Ghost 9.0, I didn't do a "true" back-up of the F drive? What won't that back-up accomplish that a true back-up would? Do I need to run both programs?

No you're fine, you made an exact duplicate of your hard drive which will work, a backup program will be able to add new items that you've added to your system to the drive containing the backup, without having to make a complete copy of the drive every time.
